KILGORE SEVENTH, GILMER THIRD | New polls are out from DCTF; Chapel Hill falls hard; New Diana rising

The Kilgore High School Bulldogs worked awfully hard to move up a spot.

And that’s exactly what they did. Kilgore is up one spot to No. 7 in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Class 4A, Division I poll, the larger 4A classification, after beating respected Pleasant Grove, 37-31, in double overtime at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium last Friday night.

The Bulldogs (3-1 this season) are finished with a challenging non-district schedule that included Carthage, Gilmer, Whitehouse and PG, and now begins their District 9-4A, Division I slate this week.

They’ll open district, ironically, with the team ranked one spot in front of them: No. 6 Pine Tree. That game is slated for Pirate Stadium in Longview, this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Also of note in the 4A-DI poll: Kilgore and Pine Tree district rival Chapel Hill, which had been ranked in the top three since the beginning of the season, slipped to No. 9 after a 45-14 home loss to Carthage on Friday night.

Other notes from this week’s DCTF rankings:

  • Gilmer, also in the ETBlitz.com coverage area, is up two spots in the DCTF Class 4A, Division II poll, from fifth to No. 3 this week. The Buckeyes survived their trip to Lindale, but it was close: they defeated Lindale, 37-36, and are now third.
  • Carthage routed Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, a surprise to us here at ETBlitz, and remains ranked No. 1 in the 4A-DII poll. Brock is 4-0, and ranked second, by the way.
  • Here’s another surprise: in the 3A-DI poll, Columbus moved from No. 2 into the No. 1 spot. Malakoff didn’t lose, but slips to second, and Bushland is third. A pair of East Texas teams are ranked in that poll: Palestine Westwood is eighth, and Jefferson is 10th.
  • New Diana continues to rise in the 3A-DII poll, up from sixth to No. 5 this week.
  • Grapeland is ranked No. 10 in the 2A-DII poll. That’s significant because of who Grapeland faces this Friday night. That’d be the red-hot Overton Mustangs, coached by Scotty Laymance.

Now, here’s why we use the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football polls, and don’t use someone else’s, or come up with our own, or some cockamamie bull like that.

We don’t believe that we’re in the business of making sports news; we’re in the business of covering it. And it’s our place to cover, as best we can, the schools in our coverage area: Kilgore, Henderson, Sabine, Gladewater, White Oak, Gilmer, Tatum, West Rusk, Arp, Troup, Overton, and Leverett’s Chapel.

The DCTF poll comes out each week just after noon on Mondays. It’s statewide, and it’s by far the longest, most tenured, respected poll in the state.

The ETBlitz coverage area has no 6A or 5A programs, but we have those polls here because we think you might be interested in them.

There are three 4A programs in our area: Kilgore and Henderson, both in the larger 4A-DI, and Gilmer, in 4A-DII.

We have several 3A programs: Sabine, Gladewater, Tatum and White Oak, all in 3A-DI, and Arp, Troup and West Rusk, all in 3A-DII.

Overton competes in 2A-DII, and Leverett’s Chapel is in six-man football (1A).

So here are the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football polls for this week, beginning with 6A.
