Cross Roads ran into a buzzsaw Thursday night at its home stadium.

The buzzsaw’s name: Overton. And the buzzsaw did not give.

Coach Scotty Laymance’s Mustangs took their show on the road Thursday night, a little more than an hour one-way road trip to face the Cross Roads Bobcats in Malakoff.

The game started, and before long, the Bobcats needed reinforcements. They didn’t come. And Overton won big, 49-22.

Overton is now 6-1 overall, 2-0 in District 11-2A, Division II; and is averaging over 48.4 points a game.

The Mustangs have won four straight – that one loss at Carlisle seems like a year ago – and they’ll take this next weekend off. Their next game will be at home against Grapeland on Oct. 23.

Overton quarterback Brooks Davis was impressive again. Davis threw 37 passes and completed 26 of them, for 274 yards, four touchdowns and just one interception.

Davis’s touchdown passes went to four different receivers: Kash Holleman, Jorge Espinoza,  Slate Butler, and Jacob Osburn. And Osburn had another huge night: 10 catches for 109 yards and the score.

Butler caught three for 43 yards and the TD; Espinosa had two for 22 and the score; and Holleman, a 7-yard TD catch.

Jackson Furlow led the team in rushing: 132 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, about 6 yards a carry. Justin Weir had 81 yards and a score on just six carries.

Bryden Gaytan led the Mustangs with 11 tackles; Gunnar Whitfield had nine, and three for loss. As a defensive unit, Overton had 74 total tackles, seven for loss, four sacks (two by Holleman and one each by Whitfield and Colton Stinecipher).

Whitfield was also credited with causing a fumble, and Butler and Levi Allred each recovered one.

Since Laymance became head coach of the Mustangs, Overton football is 34-11, and that includes this season.
