MUSTANG STAMPEDE | Overton routs Cushing to claim first outright district title since ’95

OVERTON – What were YOU doing back in 1995?
Bill Clinton was still in his first term as President of the United States. Toy Story and Goldeneye, a James Bond film, were leaders at the box office. TLC’s “Waterfalls” and “Only Wanna Be With You” by Hootie and the Blowfish were huge on the radio – not on Apple Music or iTunes because they didn’t exist.
And Overton High School football finished the regular season on top, the outright district champions, all by themselves.
It’s been a minute. Or 16,302,612 of them. But Overton made that happen again on Thursday night, here at Coach Chester Roy Stadium.
The Mustangs routed Cushing, 41-21, to win the District 11-2A, Division II championship. And they don’t share it with anyone. Overton is 9-1 – the Mustangs’ only loss came to state-ranked Carlisle back in the non-district schedule.
It’s just the latest chapter in the story of a program that has been back – and in a big way – since coach Scotty Laymance took over the reins of Overton football four years ago. Laymance has led the Mustangs to 38 wins and just 11 losses since being moved from offensive coordinator to head coach.
Like everyone else around the state, the Mustangs will begin the University Interscholastic League playoffs next week, with the ultimate goal of playing for the 2A-DII state championship at AT&T Stadium the week of Dec. 16-19.
For just a day, though, they may just sit back, sigh and enjoy the work they’ve put into the 2026 season so far.
Against Cushing, an 8-1 team coming into the game Thursday night, Overton looked dominant.
The Mustangs began their second possession right at their own 40-yard-line. Quarterback Brody Davis – just a sophomore! – connected with Jorge Espinosa for a 15-yard gain, and two plays later, Davis found maybe his favorite target, receiver Jacob Osburn, for a 29-yard gain, setting the Mustangs up at the Cushing 16.
Osburn’s next catch was for the touchdown, and then the Mustangs’ Gunner Whitfield –big Gunner Whitfield – bulled into the end zone for the two-point conversion run, giving the Mustangs an 8-0 lead with 4:50 left in the first quarter.
Overton went for and successfully recovered an onside kick, at Cushing’s 49.
Davis’s first-down throw to Jackson Furlow out in the flat, along the line of scrimmage was incomplete, but the second-down pass to Carmelo Bryant was good all the way to Cushing’s 25, for 24 yards.
A pass to Bryant in the end zone fell incomplete.
Overton’s offensive line, good in every single game this season, continued to play that way, as Davis was on-point all night.
Osburn caught a short pass, and then running back Justin Weir, on a run, got all the way into the end zone from 21 yards out, a big assist coming from lineman Elijah Dorsey, shoving Weir into the end zone.
This time, the two-point conversion attempt failed. But the Mustangs picked up just six points, and with 3:26 left in the first quarter, they were up two scores (14-0).
Colton Stinecipher had a huge sack for Overton on the Bearkats’ next series, and the quarter ended with Cushing in a third-and-11 at their own 34.
Bryant intercepted the ball on the first play of the second quarter, and set Overton up near midfield right at that spot.
He turned around and on the very next play, made a big catch from Davis, all the way down to Cushing’s 15, a 41-yard play.
Three plays later, Furlow took an end-around, a reverse, and scored on a 5-yard run. He kicked the extra point for his own touchdown and got it, giving the Mustangs a 21-0 lead with 10:53 left in the half.
Cushing scored on a 2-yard run with 5:47 left in the half (Overton 21, Cushing 7), getting the Bearkats within two touchdowns.
But Overton answered quickly, the final play a touchdown pass from Davis to Bryant. Furlow’s point after out of Osburn’s hold was good, and the Mustangs were up 28-7, the eventual halftime score.
They’d add two more touchdowns in the second half (by Weir and Furlow) and seal the win.
Davis finished 18-of-29 for 219 yards and four touchdown passes, with no interceptions.
Osburn was his usual self, making nine grabs for 91 yards and a score. Bryant had five catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Furlow had two for 46 yards and a score, and Espinosa finished with three catches for 27 yards.
Weir led the Mustangs’ running game: 95 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries, an average of about 10 ½ yards a carry. Slate Butler had 48 yards on 11 carries. Furlow had 13 on two carries, and a score.
Defensively, Bryden Gaytan had 14 tackles, one for loss, and Kash Holleman had nine. Stinecipher finished with the sack and six tackles, two for loss. Whitfield also had nine and two tackles for loss, and a sack.
