WHO’S WHERE & WHAT THE HECK IS HAPPENING | KHS @ Pine Tree, Gilmer vs. Brenham in Huntsville; KC home tomorrow

Kilgore College’s Melvin Polk (1, center) of Weatherford returned this kick 95 yards for a touchdown, sparking the Rangers to win at Navarro in a Southwest Junior College Football Conference game last Saturday at Corsicana. KC (3-0, ranked fifth nationally) hosts Cisco (1-1) in another conference game at 3 p.m. this Saturday at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium in Kilgore. Who’s where and what the heck is happening?

As usual, a lot, and this week, district play for many, although the Gilmer Buckeyes aren’t taking part in that. They’re 2-2, have won back-to-back games, and wrap up an extremely difficult non-district schedule tonight with a neutral-site game against 4-0 Brenham, at Huntsville ISD, a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Gilmer’s Buckeyes, coached by Alan Metzel, are the reigning, defending UIL Class 4A, Division II state champions, in case you’ve forgotten, and in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Poll, which is what we use here at ETBlitz.com, they’re ranked No. 3 in the state in 4A-DII, behind only Carthage and Brock.

Our game of the week this week has the Kilgore Bulldogs (3-1), ranked No. 7 in the latest DCTF state 4A, Division I poll, making the short trip (again) to Pine Tree, whose Pirates are at No. 6 in the same poll. Pine Tree is off to a 4-0 start, the program’s best since starting 3-0 in 2007. And that’s a district game once again, District 9-4A, Division I. Pine Tree had been 5A, but after UIL realignment in February, they’re now a 4A-DI athletic program, and once again in the district with Kilgore and Henderson.

At that Kilgore-Pine Tree game, there’ll be our live, real-time updates — kind of a live version of “What’s Causing All This,” if you will. Check it out, right at 7:30.

Tickets are $8 at the gate. To hear the Ragin’ Red Broadcasting call of the game, it’s on KDOK 105.3-FM, or at this link: Chalk Hill Communications.

What else is happening, involving ETBlitz-area programs?

Here’s the rest of our schedule:

Tonight, also in District 9-4A, Division I, Palestine (0-4) tries to get its first win of the season at Henderson (3-1), a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Henderson ISD Lion Stadium, and its veterans night there; Sabine (2-2) will again be without quarterback Colt Sparks as the Cardinals visit red-hot Tatum (3-1), a 7 p.m. kickoff at Tatum ISD Eagle Stadium; Sparks, dad Cal tells me, is likely not returning to football this season after expected surgery on his hand, and we wish him all the best. He’s a Texas Tech verbal commit.

Also tonight: West Rusk (1-3) visits Elkhart (1-3), starting at 7:30 p.m. there at Jerry Ives Memorial Stadium; Troup (2-2) and Arp (3-1) renew their “friendship” at 7 p.m. at Arp ISD’s Bill Herrington Stadium; White Oak (4-0) tries to remain undefeated, as the Roughnecks visit Atlanta (3-1), a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Atlanta ISD Stadium; Overton (3-1) visits Grapeland (3-1), beginning at 7 p.m.at Jerry Richards Field at Grapeland Sandies Stadium; and finally, in six-man play, Leverett’s Chapel (2-2) goes after its second straight win, at Apple Springs (1-3), a 7 p.m. kickoff tonight at Nelson Davis Stadium.

Jefferson defeated Gladewater, 41-12, at Jack V. Murphy Stadium in Gladewater Thursday night.

On Saturday, Kilgore College – ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA’s national poll – will be in action at home here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium, a 3 p.m. kickoff against Cisco (1-1). That’s a Southwest Junior College Football Conference game, and KC is the only unbeaten team remaining in the conference.
