STEVENS, OVERTON RULE AT DISTRICT MEET | Lady Mustangs win it; boys second; many off to area

Some special things are happening at Overton High School athletics right now – and one of them happened Thursday.

The Overton Lady Mustangs made history by winning their first-ever varsity district track meet, scoring 137.5 points in the District 22-2A meet at Alto.

The Lady Mustangs were paced by freshman Kaylee Stevens, who placed first in the 100 meter hurdles, the 300 meter hurdles, and the triple jump. Kaylee was the varsity girls’ high-point individual with 36 points.

In addition to Kaylee, the Lady Mustangs advancing to the area meet are Sarah Emery in the two-mile, or 3,200 meter run; Mason Fenter in the 300 meter hurdles; Siann Levoy in the high jump; Ashby Croswell in both the shot put and the discus, Kasha Williams in the shot; Jada Johnson in discus; Jamiya O’Neal in both the triple jump and the long Jump, and all three of the Lady Mustangs’ relay teams: the 4×100 team of Makayla Edwards, O’Neal, Anna Perkins, and Kelsy Vaught; the 4×200 team of  Edwards, O’Neal, Vaught, and Keyunna Brown; and the 4×400 (mile) team of Stevens, Fenter, O’Neal, and Vaught.

The Mustangs had a pretty good meet, too.

Overton’s boys placed second in the meet, with 132 points.

Jayden Edwards led the Mustangs, scoring a meet-high 35 points. Edwards was first in the long jump, second in the triple jump; second in the 200 meter dash; third in the 100 meter dash; and ran a leg on the third-place 4×400 relay.

The Mustangs also had first-place finishes by Kadden Willams in the discus and shot put, less than a week after he won a gold medal for his performance at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s state meet; and Christian Hall, with a first in the High Jump.

Along with Edwards, Willaims, and Hall, the Mustangs advancing to the area meet are Bryce Still in the 800 meter run; Vincent Herron in the 3,200 meter; Justin Weir in the 300 meter hurdles; Elijah Dorsey in the shot, and all three relay teams: the 4×100 team of Bryson Bobbitt, Rylan Holleman, Hunter Kilma, and Jacob Osburn; the 4×200 team of Holleman, Kilma, Osburn, and Weir; and the 4×400 team of Holleman, Edwards, Osburn, and Still.

Also of note: the Mustang junior varsity boys placed second, with 178.5 points, paced by Kash Holleman, the high-point individual with 37 points.
