Here at ETBlitz.com, when someone is recognized as being spectacular in their field – not just student athletes – we like to recognize ‘em.

Even if they’re the “competition.” 😊

Jack Stallard, the sports editor of the Longview News-Journal and a Kilgore resident for decades, was honored this past week, receiving the Putt Powell Sportswriter of the Year Award from the Texas High School Coaches Association.

Jack, who is as recognizable in East Texas as former, now-retired weatherman Mark Scirto, could be at least a finalist for this award every year – his work, of course, appears daily on the News-Journal’s website, and he’s the best reason to read their product. His columns are a must-read, a mix of good old-fashioned storytelling, sports, experience, emotion and the do’s and don’ts of everyday life.

Jack and his wife Rachel likely didn’t have a lot of time to worry about any awards this past weekend; they are the proud parents of Kyle Stallard, who married his longtime girlfriend Olivia on Saturday evening.

A Tennessee native, Jack relocated to East Texas in the 1980s and was the sports editor of the Kilgore News Herald from 1987-1991. He spent time at the Lufkin Daily News before returning to our area as the assistant sports editor at the News-Journal. He eventually was elevated to the sports editor’s post, although he has also served in a news editorial capacity, as well, and is a contributor to various forms of other media, especially in football season, having written for Dave Campbell’s Texas Football and as a guest on a myriad of news programs and podcasts.

Congratulations, Jack – we hope to be reading your work for decades to come.
