SABINE PRESENTS CROSS-COUNTRY AWARDS | Maldonado, Loftis win boys, girls elite awards

Sabine High School’s cross country program presented its awards for the 2023-24 school year on Thursday.

Sadie Loftis was named the girls overall most valuable runner, and Kevin Maldonado, the boys most valuable runner.

Collier Keel was named the newcomer of the year, and Emma Logan was presented the Fighting Heart award.

Sabine’s boys cross country squad has won eight district championships in a row – every title since the 2016 school year, incredibly.

They were 10th at regionals this year, out of 42 teams that competed. Maldonado was 22nd out of 180 runners, and missed a trip to the state meet in Round Rock by eight seconds.

Logan was 23rd at regionals, out of 180, and Logan, 25th, also both very close to moving on to the state meet.

Cardinals cross country is coached by Jason Heffner, the son of longtime Kilgore High track coach John Heffner.
