NEW POLLS RELEASED | Tatum debuts at 10 in 3A-DI; Kilgore still fifth in 4A-DI; Carthage still tops 4A-DII; Gilmer, 0-2, still sixth in 4A-DII

It’s good to see people rewarded for hard work, and it might not be noticed by a lot, but the Tatum Eagles were rewarded this week for playing a tough 2024 football schedule – and doing very well.

They were named our ETBlitz.com Team of the Week Monday morning, and then right around the same time, the new rankings were released from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, which is the state polls we recognize here at ETBlitz.

And coach Whitney Keeling’s Eagles are ranked number 10 in the state in Class 3A, Division I.

Congratulations to Tatum for beating Winnsboro and Daingerfield in back-to-back Thursday night games, and now they visit Newton for a tough third-game challenge.

Elsewhere of note in the new rankings:

  • Kilgore remains No. 5 in the Class 4A, Division I poll. None of the four teams in front of Kilgore – Stephenville, Chapel Hill, Frisco Panther Creek or Celina – have lost. Of course, none of them have a win over Carthage, either. At any rate, our editorial comment for the day. Moving on…
  • Pine Tree debuts in the 4A-DI poll. The Pirates are 2-0, not your big brother’s Pirates, that used to be a tomato can. And they’ll take on Dallas Carter in a non-district game this week. They’re No. 10 in the latest poll.
  • DeSoto, the previous No. 1 team in 6A, lost over the weekend, and they fall all the way to fifth. There’s a new No. 1 team in 6A, and (surprise, surprise, surprise), it’s Duncanville.
  • Carthage remains No. 1 in the Class 4A, Division II poll. The Carthage Bulldogs haven’t played since dropping the season opener to Kilgore back on Aug. 30, at their own stadium. They were off this past Friday. Yet they remain ranked in the top spot in 4A-DII.
  • Gilmer is No. 6 in 4A-DII, in spite of an 0-2 record. The Buckeyes, the defending 4A-DII champs, are also getting some serious love from the poll-voters. They opened with a narrow loss at home to Pine Tree, then lost a close game at Chapel Hill this past week. They drop one spot to No. 6 in the state. And they host Kilgore this Friday.
  • Texas High (Texarkana) continues to win, and continues to be ranked fourth in the state in the Class 5A-DII poll.
  • Liberty-Eylau, whom I covered against Henderson last week, debuts this week at No. 9 in the Class 3A-DI poll, right in front of Tatum. Another editorial comment: Trip Baysinger, L-E’s quarterback, and his group of receivers, especially Dequane Prevo, are so impressive: Prevo caught 10 balls for 258 yards and three scores in the win at Henderson Friday night. But I’m not sure L-E could stop me, Joe Hale and the senior book-readers club from marching downfield. Their defense was not impressive. Just sayin.’
  • Daingerfield, after falling to 0-2, is out of the 3A-DII poll, and New Diana, after scoring 56 on a good Gladewater team, is in, ranked seventh after being unranked so far this season. New Diana will see Sabine this Friday night.

Now, we do this every week when the new rankings come out, but here’s why ETBlitz recognizes the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football polls and doesn’t have its own.

We don’t believe that we’re in the business of making sports news; we’re in the business of covering those who do.

It’s our place to cover, as best we can, the schools in our coverage area: Kilgore, Henderson, Sabine, Gladewater, White Oak, Gilmer, Tatum, West Rusk, Arp, Troup, Overton, and Leverett’s Chapel.

The DCTF poll comes out each week just after noon on Mondays.

The ETBlitz coverage area has no 6A or 5A programs, but we have those polls here because we think you might be interested in them.

There are three 4A programs in our area: Kilgore and Henderson, both in the larger 4A-DI, and Gilmer, in 4A-DII.

We have several 3A programs: Sabine, Gladewater, Tatum and White Oak, all in 3A-DI, and Arp, Troup and West Rusk, all in 3A-DII.

Overton competes in 2A-DII, and Leverett’s Chapel is in six-man football (1A).

  1. We’ve talked about the Dave Campbell rankings. I know you respect the institution. I’m trying…BUT – how do we explain the Carthage – Kilgore – Gilmer paradox? We gotta get Stepp to explain things.
Are they saying losses to 4A Division I schools don’t count because they’re bigger schools? Are they saying the number 5 DI school is better than every DII school?
    I need answers.

    1. I agree with you, and can’t answer why Carthage remained No. 1, and why Gilmer is ranked sixth when they have two losses and no wins. Agree completely. It seems unfair. In college polls, for example, if Georgia is No. 1 and Alabama is No. 5, and Alabama beats Georgia, Georgia doesn’t remain No. 1 and Alabama fifth. There’s a penalty for losing. In the DCTF, there seems to be penalties for losing for some — and no penalty for losing for others. Or to quote “Animal Farm,” “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
I agree. I’ll reach out and see if I can get him to explain it. Or someone to explain it.
