NELSON IN TEXAS RELAYS TODAY | KHS boys, JV boys win Walter Derrick Relays; girls shine, too

Kilgore senior Braydon Nelson is headed to the big stage.

Nelson will compete at the Texas Relays at the University of Texas in Austin on Friday, taking part in the discus competition around 4:15 p.m., KHS track coach T.J. Gillen-Hall told ETBlitz.com on Thursday.

Nelson’s performance at UT – just a couple of seasons after former teammate Matthew Tyeskie, now at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, won gold in hurdles there.

But before Nelson took off to Austin, he and the Bulldogs’ track team did a little business in Gladewater. Kilgore’s varsity boys and junior varsity boys both won team titles at the Gladewater High-hosted Walter Derrick Relays on Thursday, the last meet before Kilgore will travel to Spring Hill in Longview for their most important one of the year.

Spring Hill is the site of this year’s District 17-4A Meet, and performances there decide who continues their season. Kilgore almost always sends competitors to the UIL State Track & Field Championships in Austin – back at UT – and who knows? This year might be no exception.

On Thursday, the ‘Dogs had a lot of top finishes.

In the mile relay (4X400), for example, Kilgore took first, the team of Carsyn Bynum, Jacory Walton, Zachery Gutierrez and Rylan Chaney, running the event in 3 minutes, 3.34 seconds, 20 points for Kilgore.
