LC ROUTS FOUNDERS | Leverett’s Chapel scores seven TD’s, safety in home win
The teams in the world of Texas six-man high school football log a lot of miles, a lot of yards and a lot of points.
And often, those things combine to make for some pretty exciting games.
Things likely weren’t too exciting for Mesquite Founders, though, on Friday night, as they visited a Leverett’s Chapel team ready to unload its frustrations from a week-one loss.
And the Lions did just that.
Coach Keith Hughes’ team went off, scoring seven touchdowns and a safety on defense to overwhelm Founders, 48-6.
LC (1-1) will make a rare short trip next Friday, Sept. 12, to Longview to face Heritage, a 7 o’clock start.
David Salazar scored four times for the Lions against Founders. He scored the first two touchdowns on runs of 65 and 17 yards, and then LC’s defense scored the third, a pass intercepted by Jesus Reyes. Reyes brought the kick back 64 yards for the pick-six, an interception for a score. Luis Gonzalez hit the kick after touchdown – in six-man football, that’s two points – and LC had grabbed a 20-0 lead.
It inched up by two points when LC’s Sammy Avalos and Christus Smith got a sack on the Founders quarterback in the end zone, a safety (22-0).
Salazar went back to work, a 30-yard run for a score (29-0), and the Founders got its only score of the game, a 40-yard run.
Ethan Vaden found Davis Tryon, and Tryon took it to the house, a 40-yard Lions score.
Smith found his way into the end zone from 21 yards out for another score (41-6), and then Salazar, one more time, got free and outran everybody to the end zone on a 75-yarder. Giovany Galaviz hit the kick after for the 48-6 final.
The Lions finished with 288 total yards, 40 through the air (that completion from Vaden to Tryon) and 240 on the ground. LC averaged 22 ½ yards a run.
