If you want to stay here and read Mitch Lucas’s thoughts on the game as it happens, he’ll be live shortly after 7 p.m., prior to the 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
Right now here live at the stadium, Whitehouse High School is celebrating its seniors, and then we’ll have the traditional Friday night activities: the entrance of the teams, the National Anthem, and then our kickoff.
If you’re not familiar with Whitehouse, it’s in the shadow of Tyler, and yes, it’s the hometown (and alma mater) of Kansas City quarterback and multi-time NFL most valuable player Patrick Mahomes.
By the way, I want to put this to bed finally after years of speculation. When Kilgore met Whitehouse in 2011, Mahomes wasn’t the quarterback. It was Hunter Taylor. Mahomes took over the following season. Kilgore did not play Mahomes in football in high school. Last year’s meeting between Kilgore and Whitehouse was the first since that 2011 game.
Before we really get started, I want to thank the folks here at Whitehouse ISD’s Wildcat Stadium for being so kind and accommodating to the media, both at the gate and in the press box. Super nice folks and a great place to watch a football game.
It’s 7:31 but we’re a little behind; we’re just now doing the National Anthem.

Coin is tossed and Whitehouse wins it. Whitehouse defers, so Kilgore will get the ball to open the game.
After a return, Kilgore gets the ball at the 32 to open the game.
Quarterback Kayson Brooks is joined in the backfield, oddly enough, by La’Keyleon Graves, a wide receiver. Sure enough, Graves gets the ball on a swing pass for a 24-yard gain, all the way to Whitehouse’s 44.
The first down pass after that was a loss of 5, as Rayshaun Williams caught it out of the backfield and was hit immediately. It’s second and 15 at the 49.
Williams takes the handoff and gets a big chunk of it back, all the way to the 39. It’s third and 5 now, at the Wildcats’ 39.
Dre’ Sanders goes in motion in the backfield but it’s smoke and mirrors, as Williams gets the handoff again, and takes the ball down to the 31, for 8 yards and a new set of downs.
Graves became the defensive back on the next play, as Brooks hurled a ball his direction into the end zone, but the defensive back almost picked off the jump ball.
On second down, another handoff to Williams, a 10-yard gain and another first down at the 21.

Brooks and Graves hooked up for a 6-yard gain on first down, and then another run by Williams — he darted inside, then cut it out and back to his left, breaking free for a 15-yard TOUCHDOWN, KILGORE. Eddie Jiminez hits the extra point for a 7-0 Kilgore lead, with 7:50 left in the first quarter. It was an eight-play, 68-yard drive, I’m told.
By the way, the offensive line out there for that series for the Ragin’ Red was Jaden Pastor, Aldo Loredo, Hunter Whipkey, Fabian Abeldano and Daniel Garcia, doing work in the trenches. Great job, guys.
Quarterback JoJo Adams connects with Muhammad Diarra on first down at the 25, but it’s a pass for a 1-yard loss. The rushing call on second down leaves Whitehouse in third and 6 at the 29. Adams goes long downfield, and it’s INTERCEPTED by Brayden Williams, who returns it deep into Wildcat territory, but the return is going to be negated by a penalty.
Kilgore will get the ball at the spot of the interception, at the Bulldogs’ own 41-yard-line.
Brooks’ first-down pass goes to TJ Johnigan, for 6 to the 47.
Takieran White takes the handoff from Brooks and it’s a first down and a lot more, all the way to Whitehouse’s 35, for 18 yards.
Brooks fakes a handoff on first down and bootlegs to his right, connecting with Ja’Kalen Sheffield to the 22-yard-line and another first down.
Williams takes yet another handoff, all the way to the 12 for 10 more, and another first down.
The next play: a hand fight between Graves and the Whitehouse defensive back in the end zone. Brooks threw it, it looked like the DB had it, and Graves took it away from him, in the freakin’ end zone. At any rate: TOUCHDOWN, KILGORE, a 12-yard pass from Brooks to Graves, and with Jiminez’s point after, a 14-0 Ragin’ Red advantage with 5:23 left in the first quarter.
David McGowan made a great open-field tackle for Kilgore on the kickoff by Ethan Reyes, and Whitehouse will begin at its own 18. Smith looked to have completed a pass downfield to Jadyn Gardner for a first down, just past the marker, but an official on the spot ruled it incomplete.
On the next play, though, a third-and-long, he went back to Gardner along the Kilgore sideline, and Gardner went 45 yards before Sheffield could catch him, to Kilgore’s 35-yard-line.
Za’Majeigh Mosley muddles his way for 6 yards on first down, to Kilgore’s 29 before Bi’Syn Williams pulled him down. Smith looked Gardner’s way on second down, but it ricocheted off his hands and hit the turf.
On third and 4 at the 29, Smith, out of the shotgun, just ran, but he was pulled down immediately by the Kilgore front — the quarterback draw fooled no one. He gained a yard. On fourth and 3, at Kilgore’s 28, he got enough for the first down this time, down at the 22 by Graves.
No one was open for Smith, who scooted forward on a run for 3 yards, and then Mosley tried to turn the corner on Kilgore’s defense on second down, but couldn’t — even with the Wildcats flagged for holding.
Whitehouse will get a second chance at second down, a second-down and 17 at Kilgore’s 29.
Smith rolled out to try and find Gardner — instead, he was sacked by McGowan, who seems to be everywhere on this series for Kilgore. Now it’s third and 18 at the 30.
The pass is just not happening — no one is open. Kilgore’s DBs are swarming. Smith ran and was tackled after 3 yards.
Whitehouse kicker Joshua Torres attempted a 44-yard field goal and was well short. Kilgore takes over at its own 27, with 49 seconds left in the quarter.

Brooks completes a pass to White, down the Kilgore sidelines, for 18 yards, and then from the Kilgore 40, he connects to Brenton Mumphrey for a 3-yard gain, the final play of the first quarter. Kilgore leads, 14-0.
The Bulldogs’ next possession ends in a punt, and then Isaiah Watters happens to Smith — as in, a sack on Whitehouse’s first-down play. Mosely is thrown for a 5-yard loss on second down, and on third and 20 at the Wildcats’ own 20, Smith goes long, downfield, but the pass is tipped away by Williams.
Kilgore is flagged for roughing the passer, after having stopped the Wildcats on third and forever, allowing a new set of downs.
On the second-down play, though, wow: Smith tries to complete a pass on the Whitehouse sideline to Ace Olivares; the ball bounced off of Olivares, who had fallen down, and up, into the hands of Kilgore’s Brayden Williams. Williams made his second INTERCEPTION of the game, and took this one back 41 yards for a TOUCHDOWN, KILGORE.
Jiminez hit the point after, and with 9:08 left in the half, Kilgore leads 21-0.
Reyes again sends the kickoff into the end zone, and Whitehouse will start at its own 25-yard-line.
A run for just 1 by Mosely and then an incomplete pass leaves Whitehouse in a quick third-and-9, at its 21. Smith’s pass attempt downfield to Olivares was just that, an attempt, falling short. Kilgore’s Graves drops back into punt return formation, but he won’t get it. The punt is kicked well short, and there’s no return at all, out of bounds at Kilgore’s 49-yard-line, just a 25-yard punt and no return.
Williams, in the backfield with Brooks, takes another handoff, for 8 yards. He’s got 46 rushing yards right now.
Well, it’s bombs away time, and it’s Brooks letting it fly. It’s caught by Tyler Johnigan, a 43-yard TOUCHDOWN, KILGORE. The extra point is becoming academic at this point for Jiminez, who hits another, and this is like a video game, folks, with Kayson Brooks on the controller. With 7:20 left in the half, it’s 28-0 Kilgore.
I said that, and then it’s Whitehouse QB Smith breaking free for 40 yards, all the way to Kilgore’s 35-yard-line.
The next play: a go-for-it-all throw from Smith into double coverage, a ball that’s almost caught, then almost intercepted, then almost caught again, and ultimately fell to the ground.
On the next play, Smith tries to get free, and is hauled down by members of Kilgore’s defensive front. After offsetting penalties, it’s second and 10 at the 35.
Smith’s pass is incomplete, and it really should be fourth down, but it’s third and 10 at the 35. Smith goes long to Malachi Allen at the goal line, and the ball bounced off his hands, another incompletion. The Wildcats are flagged for holding on the play, but Kilgore declines it, and it’s fourth down.
Whitehouse’s next call: another pass downfield, this one to Allen, as well, but it’s incomplete. It’s a turnover on downs, and Kilgore claims the ball at that spot, at its own 35.

Williams, behind that big offensive line, breaks for another long gain, this one all the way up to the 47 for 12 yards.
On the next play, 6 more, to Whitehouse’s 48. The second-quarter clock just went down past the 5 1/2-minute mark. This first half has been a LONG one.
Brooks flips the ball to White — this is a pass — and he takes it down the Whitehouse sideline, all the way to the 21 for 27 yards and another first down.
Williams comes behind that line again, for 7 yards inside the 15. On the next play, Williams gets to the goal line, but a holding penalty brings it back, and for just a 3-yard gain. It’s second down at the Whitehouse 16.
White makes all that moot, as he goes over the center for an 11-yard TOUCHDOWN, KILGORE. Jiminez is automatic on that extra point, and Kilgore leads 35-0, with 3:41 left until halftime.
The Wildcats have the ball at midfield, specifically Kilgore’s 49, on a third-and-10. Mosely again tries the corner and still can’t turn it. It’s fourth and 7 at the 46.
The punt is a good one, and drills Kilgore back to its worst field position of the game, the 9-yard-line. Brooks drops back, finds a wide-open Sheffield streaking down the middle of the field, and hits him in stride. Sheffield makes the catch at the Kilgore 45, then outruns everybody to the end zone for a 91-yard TOUCHDOWN, KILGORE. Jiminez’s point after makes it 42-0 Kilgore, and my goodness. But there is no mercy rule in Texas 11-man high school football.
By the way, SPOILER ALERT: Speaking of Patrick Mahomes, he and the Kansas City Chiefs are trailing the L.A. Chargers, 13-6, at halftime in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
And it’s halftime here at Wildcat Stadium, now, with Kilgore up convincingly, 42-0, over Whitehouse.
Brooks has only missed on two of his pass attempts; he’s 13-of-15 for four touchdowns and 260 yards for Kilgore. My gosh.

Yes, the third.

Mosely is ruled down at the goal line, first and goal coming up.

Williams has a touchdown called back on a hold, and Kilgore is in first and 20 at the Whitehouse 41.
Make it first and 25 after a false start, by Williams gets free and gets all of it but one. It’s now second and 1 at the 22. The next run: another Williams special, a 20-yarder to the Wildcat’s 2-yard-line.
