GILMER REMAINS THIRD | Carthage still No. 1; Kilgore slides out of 4A-DI top 10

Shake-ups, drop-outs, move-ups, move-outs… Whatever you want to call it, we’ve got some in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football state rankings of Texas high school football teams this week.

For all things Dave Campbell’s, check out their site at Texas High School Football – Coverage From Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. There’s so much more that they offer in addition to the magazine y’all buy every year. An online subscription keeps you up to speed every single day.

At any rate, on to this week’s rankings – there are new rankings, by the way, every Monday during the regular season, around 12:15 p.m., of every classification, from 6A all the way through six-man.

In the ETBlitz.com coverage area, now, we don’t have a 6A or a 5A program – we do have three 4A programs: Kilgore, Henderson and Gilmer. Gilmer is 4A, Division II, the 4A with the smaller enrollment, and Kilgore and Henderson, of course, are DI, with a little bit larger enrollment.

Gilmer’s Buckeyes are the reigning, defending 4A-DII state champions, and coach Alan Metzel and the Buckeyes had an open date last week. They’re still ranked right where they were: No. 3 in the state in the DCTF Class 4A-DII poll, behind top-ranked Carthage and No. 2-ranked Brock. Gilmer is 3-2, and they’ll open District 7-4A, Division II play this Friday at Pittsburg, a 7 p.m. kickoff.

By the way, another East Texas team ranked in that poll are the Pleasant Grove Hawks – PG checks in at No. 9.

Of note from other spots in this week’s DCTF rankings:

  • Kilgore drops out of the 4A-DI top 10 after slipping to Henderson, 27-24, on the game’s final play. Henderson’s Ivan Navarro kicked a 20-yard field goal as time expired to hand the Bulldogs their second loss of the season. The Bulldogs are 4-2 on the year, 1-1 in District 9-4A, Division I, as they head to Chapel Hill this Friday. Henderson (5-1, 2-0) is conspicuously not ranked, however.

Chapel Hill, by the way, is ranked No. 5 this week in the DCTF 4A-DI poll, up a spot from No. 6 a week ago. Chapel Hill’s Bulldogs are still recovering from a beat-down they suffered at the hands of Carthage a few weeks ago, and who beat Carthage?

Kilgore. It’s all a circle, folks, between some very good 4A teams in East Texas.

  • Pine Tree is still ranked No. 9 in the 4A-DI poll, coming off a win at Mabank last Friday.
  • Jefferson remains ranked No. 8 in the 3A-DI poll, and will face an ETBlitz-area team, White Oak, this Friday night. Also in the 3A-DI poll, Liberty-Eylau is now ranked. L-E beat another ETBlitz-area program, Tatum, last Friday night. Tatum was ranked 10th, but has fallen out of the poll once again.
  • New Diana, which had an open date, remains ranked fifth in the 3A-DII poll; they’ll host West Rusk this Friday.
  • In spite of five straight wins and beating people like they stole government mules, Overton is not ranked in the 2A-DII poll. Beckville, however, is ranked No. 6 in the 2A-DI poll.

Again, here are the high school programs in the ETBlitz.com coverage area, in alphabetical order: Arp, Gilmer, Gladewater, Henderson, Kilgore, Leverett’s Chapel, Overton, Sabine, Tatum, Troup, West Rusk and White Oak.

We use the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football rankings because they are the oldest, most respected rankings in the state, and quite frankly, why would we use anything else?

Here they are, in their entirety, released on Monday, Oct. 7, 2024.
