TEXAS RANGERS REPORT | Seager does it again, homers in his eighth straight game, as Texas sweeps Arizona

ARLINGTON – Prime-time, late night, even matinee – line ‘em up, and Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager is going to hit it.

Except he almost didn’t.

It looked for most of Wednesday’s afternoon home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks that Seager’s hitting streak would stop right there, including an intentional walk in the third inning, and that his seven-game home run streak would also come to a screeching halt.

But Seager broke through again, smashing a two-out two-run home run in the fifth inning to help the Rangers beat Arizona, 6-1, and sweep the D’backs, the team they also defeated last fall to win the World Series. Seager has now hit a home run in eight straight games, and has 13 on the year, four in the last three games.

Texas, winners of three straight, is 14-13 at home this season, and is now 27-29 on the year, although they do still trail Seattle in the American League West Division – it’s still super-early in the season to worry about that just yet.

Arizona drops to 25-30 on the year and they’ve lost seven of their last 11.

The D’backs move on to New York on Thursday, where they begin a series with the Yankees tomorrow night. The Rangers take Thursday off, and then visit Miami for a series with the Marlins that starts Friday night at 6:10 p.m.

Back to Wednesday’s afternoon game at Globe Life Park.

Jonah Heim had an RBI double in the third to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead and Seager was walked. It was 2-0 in the fifth when he smacked his 13th homer of the season. Seager finished the day 1-of-3. Heim and Wyatt Langford each had two hits, and Ezequiel Duran, Josh Smith, designated hitter Travis Jankowski, and Leody Taveras each had one. Nathaniel Lowe had a sac fly.

Dane Dunning went five innings on the mound and got the win for Texas. He allowed no runs, three hits (all, oddly enough, by Arizona center fielder Corbin Carroll), walked four and struck out six. Dunning is 4-3 this season.

Ryne Nelson took the loss. He threw six innings, allowed four earned runs on five hits, walked three and struck out three.

Of note: second baseman Marcus Semien sat this one out, still sore from a collision in the outfield with Adolis Garcia back on May 18. It ended a streak of 349 consecutive games played for Semien, dating back to May 13, 2022.
