DOWN WENT MART, UP WENT OVERTON | …and the Mustangs are the Goudarzi & Young, LLP / ETBlitz.com Team of the Week!
Here’s all you need to know, all the qualifications that Overton High School football needed to be named the Goudarzi & Young, LLP / ETBlitz.com Team of the Week…
…They beat Mart.
Coach Scotty Laymance’s Overton Mustangs – on the rise, really, since August 2023, knocked off a Mart team that reached the University Interscholastic League’s Class 2A state championship game the previous six years. Mart won three straight titles from 2017-19, and have been to the state championship game the last three years, losing there.
But Mart’s season is over, courtesy of a 31-30 loss to Overton last Friday night at Kemp High School.
Any team that can pull off THAT feat has GOT to be the team of the week!
And it is called the “team of the week,” but just for one second, let’s look at a couple of numbers:
- 20-4: That’s Overton’s record since Laymance took over as head coach, since the start of the 2023 season.
- 10-2: That’s the Mustangs’ record so far this season.
- 43 ½: That’s the number of points the Mustangs are averaging per game in 2024.
- 40: The number of touchdowns Bryce Still has thrown this year.
- 78: The number of touchdowns Still has thrown last year and this year combined.
- 6: That’s how many interceptions Still has thrown on 318 pass attempts this year.
- 1,415: The number of catches that Jayden Edwards has this year.
- 22: Jayden Edwards’ touchdown number through 12 games.
- 1,893: The number of yards rushing the Mustangs have.
- 32: The total number of rushing touchdowns for Overton this season.
- 2: The number of walk-off field goals by freshman Jackson Furlow this year.
- Also 2: The number of teams Furlow has made cry after those field goals.
- 10: The grade that Justin Weir is in.
- 123: The ridiculous number of tackles Weir’s got in 2024.
- 6, part two: The number of combined interceptions that Mason Rowe and Jacob Osburn have.
- And finally, 1: The number of times Overton and Grapeland have already played this year – and also, the number of wins Overton has over Grapeland this year. Overton beat Grapeland, in Grapeland, 41-36 on Sept. 27.
That’s significant because – this Friday at Bruce Field in Athens – Overton and Grapeland meet again, a 6 p.m. kickoff, and this time it’s winner advances, loser goes home in the third round, or regional semifinals, of the UIL Class 2A, Division II playoffs.
Here’s a link where you can read our story about Overton’s huge win over Mart, in case you missed it Friday night: OVERTON WINS! | Mustangs take down Mart, will face Grapeland in Athens on Friday at 6.
And here’s a link you’ll need – Goudarzi & Young, L.L.P. – Tyler & Longview Personal Injury Lawyers – if you ever need legal representation and want the very best.
Brent Goudarzi and Marty Young don’t just say they’re the best: they have the numbers to back it up.
For anyone facing problems after a car or 18-wheeler accident, personal or property injury, including in the oilfields or burn injuries, or in the event of a wrongful death, there’s only one law firm in the ETBlitz.com coverage area who can boast they have the President of the National Trial Lawyers Association as their lead; only one firm here that has the top three settlements in the history of the U.S. in 18-wheeler accidents; only one firm with a staff ready to help you, who only gets paid if you win.
That firm is Goudarzi & Young, located in Longview and Gilmer.
And Goudarzi & Young, as well as the staff of ETBlitz.com, congratulates the Overton Mustangs on their win over Mart, wishes them well in the playoffs this Friday, and also congratulates them for being the Goudarzi & Young, LLP / ETBlitz.com Team of the Week!
