Our honorees this time come from a playoff baseball team who made short work of their opponent, and, unfortunately for our girls winner and her team, a softball player whose team’s season ended in a valiant effort.

Carson Gonzalez is one of several players for the Tatum Eagles who have kept the Eagles rolling this year, like any true baseball team. The Eagles won their district championship, then heated up even more at the end of the season, and rolled on right through the first two rounds of the University Interscholastic League’s Class 3A playoffs.

Tatum beat White Oak in two games in the first, or bi-district, round of a best-of-three-game series played in Marshall, dealing the Roughnecks a 10-0 game one loss before winning a much-closer 2-0 game two to close out the series.

And then last week, Tatum went on the road, beating Winnsboro in a 5-1 win in game one, and closed out the series, a second sweep, with a 6-3 win in game two at Tatum High School.

Our boys winner, Gonzalez, had a big role in that.

Carson was on the mound for the game one win, that 5-1 win. He allowed three hits and three walks, and struck out four, and also went 3-for-4 – all of his hits, doubles. By the way, he also had 4 RBI – four of the Eagles’ five runs that crossed the plate did so with the help of Gonzalez’s bat.

And in game two on Friday, Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and also scored a run. He played center field and caught all three balls that were hit to him in the game.

For those performances, and helping Tatum get to the 3A regional quarterfinals against West Rusk this week, Carson Gonzalez is our Whataburger / ETBlitz.com boys Player of the Week for the week of May 6 through May 11.

Our girls award-winner didn’t have things work out quite as well in the win-loss category, but deserves the award for clutch performer.

Having lost game one of their best-of-three series in the UIL Class 2A softball regional quarterfinal to Cross Roads at Tyler Legacy last week, Overton’s Lady Mustangs had their backs against the wall.

They needed a lift, and they got it from Kayla Nobles, who hit a three-run home run out of the park in game two, trying to help get her team into a position to win the game, force game three and maybe advance to the regional semifinals.

But it wasn’t to be, as Cross Roads would go on to win the game in nine innings, 6-5.

Still, Nobles had a big bat in the game when it mattered most, and for that, Kayla Nobles is our Whataburger / ETBlitz.com girls Player of the Week for the week of May 6 through May 11.

Here are all of our previous winners:

It’s also pretty clear we’ve had a great time this season presenting the players of the week each week to deserving young men and women in the ETBlitz.com coverage area.

And when you want to have a great time, and great food to go along with it, go to our sponsor for these awards each week – go to Whataburger.

Not just after the game, although you can do that: Whataburger is open 24-7, all the time.

But go there for breakfast, lunch or supper. Check out their menu here online before you go: Whataburger | Order Online with Curbside and Delivery.

You might see the ETBlitz.com crew there!
