STATE POLLS OUT | Carthage, Troup still rule their rankings; Kilgore remains 7th in 4A-DI

The week two version of the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football state high school football rankings looks an awful lot like last week’s.

The biggest shake-up was in the Class 5A, Division I poll, where year-in, year-out favorites Highland Park and DeSoto have dropped completely out of the poll. Yep, you read that right: DeSoto was the preseason No. 1 team in the state in 5A-DI, but now they’re out of the top 10. Highland Park, too – that’s a little shocking, after 30-plus years of stability.

Locally, in rankings involving ETBlitz.com-area programs, Carthage remains the No. 1 team in the state in the 4A, Division II rankings, and Kilgore, which had an open date last weekend, remains No. 7 in the 4A-DI poll.

Gilmer, in spite of its beatdown of Chapel Hill last Friday in Tyler, did not ease back into the 4A-DII poll, and in spite of two very impressive wins, the Overton High School Mustangs did not crack the top 10 in 2A-DII.

Other items of note:

  • Waxahachie remained No. 1 in the Class 6A poll.
  • Longview moved up to 10th in that same poll; the Lobos were 15th a week ago. Longview (2-0) put a pretty good whipping on rival Marshall on Friday night, 61-13.
  • The new No. 1 in 5A-DI is Smithson Valley, up from No. 2 last week.
  • South Oak Cliff remains No. 1 in 5A-DII, in spite of the fact that they’re 0-1, and had the week off this past week.
  • Defending 4A-DI state champion Stephenville moved to 2-0, but by the skin of their teeth, as rival Brownwood led the game with just a couple of seconds remaining – Stephenville scored very late to eke out with a 28-24 win. But a win is a win, and they’re unbeaten.
  • Lindale, ranked second behind Stephenville in the 4A-DII= poll, also had to pull a few magic tricks to come from behind and beat Whitehouse last Friday. Lindale maintains its second overall ranking in that poll.
  • As mentioned, coach Clint Fuller’s Kilgore Bulldogs are ranked seventh; the Ragin’ Red has played only one game, a loss at Pleasant Grove in week one. But Kilgore will be tested again this week, a road trip to Gilmer on Friday night.
  • Carthage is still the top dog, pun intended, in 4A-DII, after beating Pine Tree, 67-36, Friday night. Coach Scott Surratt is in his 20th season now at Carthage and has 11 state titles there to prove it. They have an open date this week.
  • Columbus is still No. 1 in 3A-DI, and locally, coach Sam Wells’ Troup Tigers smashed Edgewood, 63-21, and are ranked tops in the state in 3A-DII.
  • Finally, they’re not in the ETB coverage area, but congratulations to Union Hill, a six-man program in Gilmer. Union Hill is No. 1 in the biggest six-man division, 1A-DI.

Now, beginning with 6A, here are all the rankings, as ETBlitz.com recognizes the longstanding prestige of the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football rankings as the ONLY real poll of Texas state high school football. Give those folks some business: there’s a link below to subscribe. We don’t have a paywall to subscribe to ETBlitz.com, but the folks at DCTF do a great job of covering the sport.
