It’s almost like Kilgore College men’s basketball star Jamil Muttilib decided, “You know what? I’m gonna just score as much as I can – then we win, right?”

Muttilib dropped 67 points on Trinity Valley and Navarro, combined, has helped the Rangers to three straight wins, lifting them up in the Region XIV Conference standings. And that’s why Muttilib is the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Player of the Week for last week, the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 3.

But he’s not alone. He’s joined by Henderson’s Kyeisha Clater, who had 23 points to help Henderson edge Center, 55-53.

Muttilib, a 6-foot-6 sophomore guard from Houston who wears number 11 for the Rangers, has really came up big the entire season. But he’s put on a clinic the last two games.

Against Trinity Valley last Wednesday, Muttilib netted 42 points on 12-of-20 shooting, hit 5-of-7 three-point shots that he took, went 13-of-15 from the free throw line, had six rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot – and he did it in 35 minutes, 18 seconds of the 40-minute game clock. KC went on to beat Trinity Valley – who was near the top of the conference standings – by the score of 99-83.

Then, the Rangers’ schedule sent them to Corsicana, where they took on the always-tough Navarro Bulldogs. This time, Muttilib played 36 minutes, scored 25 points on 6-of-13 shooting and 3-of-5 from three-point range, 10-of-11 from the line. He also had four rebounds, a steal and a block, and the Rangers won, 81-70.

KC has a 17-6 overall record in this three-game win streak, and they’re 7-5 in conference play, 8-2 at home at Masters Gymnasium.

On Saturday, KC is home at 4 p.m. against Bossier Parish, and then they visit Panola College for a rematch of their tight game here back on Jan. 24, a 67-60 Rangers loss.

Clater, now, is helping Henderson’s Lady Lions to get into the University Interscholastic League’s 4A girls basketball playoffs. And for that, Clater is the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com girls Player of the Week!

She scored 23 points, and had four steals and three rebounds in the win over Center. Henderson has won two of its last three games, and finishes its regular season with a game at Chapel Hill tonight (the boys game to follow).

Currently, Henderson is 6-5 in district play (19-9 overall) and in fourth place in District 15-4A – Center leads the district standings, followed by Chapel Hill and Gilmer, then Henderson. Carthage is behind Henderson and in fifth. The top four teams in each district, of course, go to the postseason; everyone else stays home.

And where do sports crowds in East Texas – well, and everywhere else, for that matter? – go after the game?

Whataburger, naturally.

Take a look at the menu before you head to Whataburger tonight right here: Whataburger | Order Online with Curbside and Delivery. You can’t go wrong with any choice – try the new Whata Wings, boneless chicken wings you can get without sauce, or smothered in four different sauces: honey barbecue, sweet & spicy, Buffalo, or honey butter.

Congratulations, Jamil, and Kyeisha, for being the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Players of the Week!
