WHATABURGER/ ETBLITZ.COM PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | A Sabine soccer star shines, and a Kilgore Bulldog helps his team get back on track

A fantastic performance on the soccer field by a Sabine High School star and a performance by a Kilgore basketball player to get the Bulldogs back on track are our honorees for the week of Jan. 15-20.

Sabine’s Bella Shaw, who scored four goals and had an assist in the Lady Cardinals’ 5-2 win over Tatum – a win in the Lady Cards’ District 15-4A opener – allows Ms. Shaw to be the Whataburger/ETBlitz.com Girls Player of the Week. Shaw, just a junior, is set to take on Kilgore on Tuesday night in the second district game for both Sabine and KHS. The action here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium starts at 5 p.m. with an abbreviated junior varsity game, due to the weather, and varsity will follow.

And for his performance in the Bulldogs’ 54-42 win at Spring Hill last Friday, Jan. 19, Kilgore senior Braydon Nelson is the Whataburger/ETBlitz.com Boys Player of the Week.

Nelson had 21 points to lead the Bulldogs in the District 17-4A victory, one that snapped a two-game losing streak and allowed coach Jeff Coleman’s ‘Dogs to move to 4-2 in district play, their only losses being at home to Center and home to Chapel Hill.

Kilgore is set to host Gilmer on Tuesday night, as the second round of district play begins for the Bulldogs. Before that, though, there will be subvarsity games starting at 4:30 p.m. at KHS, and then Lady Bulldogs also will face Gilmer. The varsity girls game should begin around 6, 6:15 p.m., and the varsity boys will be played afterward.

Thanks to Whataburger for honoring these student athletes – there have been three weeks of Whataburger/ETBlitz.com Players of the week so far: Diego Rosas and Phenix Rivers (WHATABURGER / ETBLITZ.COM PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | First-ever winners are Kilgore’s Diego Rojas, Phenix Rivers!), both of them Kilgore High School soccer standouts; then Kilgore College basketball standouts Jamil Muttilib and Nyla Inmon (WHATABURGER/ ETBLITZ.COM PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | KC stars step up in conference games), and now Shaw and Nelson.
