What ABOUT them Cowboys?

It’s an NFL Sunday today, and week three of the league’s 2025 schedule takes the Dallas Cowboys to the Windy City, Chicago, Illinois, where they’ll face the Chicago Bears at 3:25 p.m. on FOX.

So, here’s the deal: looking at how bad the Chicago Bears have been since, well, about 2007, Cowboys fans I’ve heard this week have their confidence up.

Don’t fall for it.

Dallas looked absolutely fantastic in its finish to beat the New York Giants last week, even after Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did his impression of 2015 Russell Wilson, and had a pair of deep balls that burned the Cowboys – and almost beat them.

But Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott, as he sometimes does (but not often enough), helped save the day, and luckily he brought kicker Brandon Aubrey along with him, who hit two clutch field goals down the stretch to give Dallas a 41-40 win.

The Cowboys are now 1-1, and have a chance to make a run here – IF they don’t blow it today in Chicago (0-2 and looking absolutely putrid, as usual). Dallas gets Chicago today, and then Green Bay at AT&T Stadium next Sunday night.

If the Cowboys can get by BOTH of those, the first two weeks of October aren’t guaranteed wins, but it’s looking awfully good: road trips to both the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers, who don’t have “Super Bowl champion” stamped on their chests anywhere. Get my drift?

In case you missed it

  • Kilgore College had a rough go of it Saturday afternoon at home, dropping a 53-10 decision to Navarro in a Southwest Junior College Football Conference game. The Rangers drop to 1-2 overall, and 0-2 in the conference. It is officially crunch time. They play at Cisco next Saturday. Here’s our story by Shawn Christopher on KC-Navarro: NAVARRO DEALS KC CONFERENCE LOSS | Rangers overwhelmed, 53-10, but most of season ahead.
  • What happened Friday night in Gilmer? The Buckeyes lost again? These are strange times for Gilmer, but our staff here at ETBlitz.com has seen this before, and our collective bet is that they get it figured out. In spite of the last two weeks – losses to Kilgore and to Lindale – that’s what longtime Gilmer writer Phillip Williams thinks, too. Williams’ take on football and life is an absolute must-read, and you can do so, his thoughts on the Gilmer-Lindale game and the current state of the Buckeyes, right here: LINDALE GETS BY GILMER | But Buckeyes have been down before, only to reach state heights / ANALYSIS by PHILLIP WILLIAMS.
  • By now, you might have heard about how Kilgore outlasted Pleasant Grove, and how K.J. Edwards put on his Superman cape for Carthage – and was joined by “Batman,” Benny Smith, in bringing the Bulldogs from behind to beat Chapel Hill.

Check out our Friday night football stories on the site now here:

Kilgore-Pleasant Grove: IT’S KILGORE!! | Bulldogs outlast PG in top-10 battle, in Fuller’s return.

Carthage-Chapel Hill: CARTHAGE FENDS OFF CHAPEL HILL | Another attempt to knock off No. 1 fails, but Chapel Hill gave it a great try.

Arp-Sabine: ARP FLEXES MUSCLES | Tigers beat Sabine, 61-0, in preparation for showdown with Troup.

West Rusk-Tatum: A RAIDERS-EAGLES SLUGFEST | West Rusk comes from behind to get by Tatum, 14-10

Henderson-Gainesville: HENDERSON WHIPS GAINESVILLE | Scores 56 first-half points

Overton-Maud: MUSTANGS RIDE AGAIN | Overton blasts Maud, 49-22.

  • Later today, we’ll have The Flyover, our roundup of the rest of the weekend in high school football: how Pine Tree held off Hallsville in overtime; a blowout win for Gladewater over Spring Hill; Trinity School of Texas’ win over LC in which well over 200 points were scored in that six-man contest; how White Oak kept it rolling with a 69-6 win at home over Queen City; Troup’s win over Rusk; and how Beckville coach Cody Ross has brought the Bearcats.

Rangers’ report

We haven’t checked in on the ol’ Texas Rangers in a while, and the regular season is winding down. How’re they doing? Have they got a chance to make the playoffs?

Well, they didn’t do too well Saturday.

Texas came up short to the Miami Marlins, 4-3, and the Rangers are now 79-76 on the season.

And here’s the problem with that.

Right now, neither the Rangers nor the Houston Astros are in the lead in the American League West Division; the Seattle Mariners are. Seattle is 86-69, in first place in the AL West. The Astros are 84-71, so they’re two games back. And the Rangers are seven games behind the Mariners, with just six games left.

There’s also bad news regarding the AL wild card race. The New York Yankees are in the lead there (87-68), with Boston second, then Cleveland, and then Houston.

And then the Rangers. So they’re fifth in the race for the wild card. Not good.

Texas hosts the Marlins again today, a 1:35 p.m. start at Globe Life, and then takes Monday off. They’ll have the last home series of the 2025 season, it looks like, beginning Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins (7:05 p.m.). They’ll host the Twins on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and then visit Cleveland to close the season next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
