EDITOR’S NOTE: Wake Up! is here every single morning on ETBlitz.com, presented by Cozy Coffee Station, and if you haven’t been there, GO! Like literally, stop what you’re doing, and go, right now. Go see for yourself at 110 Midtown Plaza in Kilgore, or at 755 Highway 271 in Gilmer. And right now online at Home | Cozy Coffee Station.

What’s happening in the immediate

Now that we’ve told you guys the plans to expand our coverage area and include Carthage, Pine Tree and Beckville, that was, as far as I know, our last big announcement for now. We do have a Whataburger Personality Profile coming up this week, and this time, it’s an actual interview, not a poll, and it’s a familiar face to some of you who likely followed him after his high school career, and into his career as — well, I won’t spoil it. I’ll say his career as an international figure. How about that? That’ll get you thinking.

My plans for this week is to go ahead and get you guys all of the schedules from our coverage area that involve football, volleyball and those schools that do have fall tennis and cross country who have their schedules completed. If you have all of those by week’s end, I’ll be thrilled to pieces. Not really pieces. But I’ll be happy, how’s that?

Check out our feature tomorrow on Arizona State’s C.J. Fite, a defensive lineman from Tatum who I believe has an outstanding chance to be the Big 12 Conference defensive player of the year. The Sun Devils did so well last year in the conference, and in getting to the College Football Playoff. We’ll focus in on C.J. in our new feature, In Focus by Kilgore-Gilmer Eye Care Center, on Sunday, probably hitting about the time you’re getting home from church.

Some guy making Cowboys predictions

I want to make it completely clear that before the NFL season begins, I’ll have my own predictions on what I think the Dallas Cowboys will do, what I believe the Houston Texans will do, who I believe will win the Super Bowl, and so on. It’s a little early for that.

But one guy, a writer from CBS Sports named Tyler Sullivan, is already counting the Cowboys’ chickens before they hatch, in a good way.

Ol’ Tyler (or maybe it’s young Tyler, who knows? No photo of him in here) is stating that Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott, with receiver Cee Dee Lamb back in the fold and now George Pickens as a new toy in the mix, will go past the 4,000-yard passing mark, and then adds the caveat IF Dak is healthy.

Well, heck, Tyler, I can predict that. Is that not pretty much true for everybody? The key is will Prescott STAY healthy, and I’m not sure about that.

I can tell you that he’s gone past the 4,000-yard mark three times in his nine-year career, and twice in the last five years.

Rangers report

So, Texas beat Houston, 7-3, last night as this road series in Houston begins. As it gets started, the Rangers have got some digging to do, as in, digging out in the American League West Division. They’re 47-48 on the season, just a half-game in front of the L.A. Angels and 2 1/2 behind the Seattle Mariners in second place. Houston leads the AL West (the Astros are 55-39 overall) by six games over Seattle, and Texas is 8 1/2 back. Absolutely not un-doable, but the Rangers may have to win, win, win and hope Houston has a little bad luck after the break for Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game.

Speaking of that, the Rangers play at Houston tonight at 6:35 p.m., and on Sunday at 1:10. There are no games Monday or Tuesday; the home run derby is Monday night, and the all-star game is Tuesday, both in Atlanta.

Classic ’80s Saturday

You know it. I love it. Maybe you do, too. And here’s what I’m hearing in my head today, so here’s what we’re going with. This is my favorite Aerosmith song, which is saying something. It’s “Angel,” from the Permanent Vacation album in 1988.
