A pair of state championships trumped everything else this past week, as two area powerlifters are this week’s honorees.

Kadden Williams of Overton High School won the Class 1A/2A super-heavyweight class at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s State Meet in Abilene on Saturday. Williams put the “power” in “powerlifting,” with a squat of 700 pounds, a bench press of 470 pounds and a deadlift of 540 pounds for 1,710 pounds, total.

Williams beat Yorktown’s Hunter Hall, who finished in second place, by 45 pounds, and beat third-place finisher Rhett Tucker, of Simms Bowie, by 100 pounds.

For his efforts in winning the state lifting title at its heaviest division, Williams is the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Boys Player of the Week for the week of March 18-22.

And our girls honoree also pulled her magic at Abilene, as well.

Henderson’s Nolyn Norris captured the girls state championship in the 148-pound division in Class 4A, Division I, with a total lift of 980 pounds: 420 pounds in the squat, 215 pounds in the bench, and 345 pounds in the deadlift.

Norris beat Beeville Jones lifter Eldonnette Chancellor, the second-place finisher, by quite a bit, actually: Norris beat her by 65 pounds.

And for winning the state championship, Norris is the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Girls Player of the Week.
