THE WHATABURGER / ETBLITZ.COM PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | Hey, it’s JT and Overton’s Skyler Colvin

Kilgore’s Javon “JT” Towns (at far left) leads a pack of Bulldogs to the end zone. He did that twice last week against Chapel Hill: on offense, a 76-yard touchdown, and on defense, an over-100-yard interception return for a TD. Towns and Overton’s Skyler Colvin, who helped the Lady Mustangs to a pair of huge district wins last week, are the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Players of the Week for Oct. 7 through Oct. 12. Kilgore High School receiver and defensive back Javon Towns has had several near-misses with the player of the week award.

He just didn’t know it.

Towns had almost won the honor several times this season already, in our previous five weeks, only to have someone else take it.

Not this time.

And on the other hand, our girls honoree this week came out of nowhere. Overton’s Skyler Colvin had not been mentioned before this past week, while there are several candidates whose names come up again and again. Colvin is a newcomer, and took the award.

JAVON TOWNS

So, for both cases, we’re so proud to announce that Kilgore High School’s Javon Towns and Overton High’s Skyler Colvin are the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 7-12!

Kilgore fans, especially those who have seen all seven of the Bulldogs’ games this year, can tell you that Javon is one of those players who – well, let’s just say big plays tend to follow him around.

Not really – he makes them.

For instance, even before this week, Towns, a senior, had both of Kilgore’s touchdowns in the key District 9-4A, Division I win at Pine Tree.

After this past week, Chapel Hill players might still be watching for Towns to run past them one more time. Towns was all over the place last week in the Ragin’ Red’s 42-7 victory.

It started from the jump, as Towns caught a pass from Kayson Brooks and took it 76 yards to the house, all the way for a touchdown, and set the tone for the rest of the game. Kilgore’s speed was on display early, thorough and often.

He would finish with four catches for 106 yards and the touchdown on offense, but did so much more.

On special teams, he had a 61-yard punt return, and he’s just one of a handful of Kilgore players that are absolutely a threat to do that anytime they’re back for a return.

And there was this: an interception that he grabbed in his own end zone and took all the way back, an interception returned for a touchdown of over 100 yards, and that play was the punctuation mark on the Bulldogs’ second rout of Chapel Hill in the last three games. He also had eight tackles.

So for his overall performance, Javon Towns is the Whataburger / ETBlitz boys Player of the Week.

Skyler, now, at Overton is in a little bit different position.

She’s just a sophomore, so she’s already setting an example with her play, even though she’s not an upper-classman. And the Lady Mustangs are very much in contention for the District 19-2A volleyball title, a district that includes Alto, Grapeland, Latexo, and Carlisle.

At this writing, Overton is 3-1 in district play, and is scheduled to host Alto Tuesday night.

Last week, Overton went to five sets with Grapeland on Tuesday and swept Carlisle on Friday.

SKYLER COLVIN

Colvin helped in the 25-10, 25-22, 25-16 win over Carlisle – she had four kills and six digs – but she was a huge factor in the 24-26, 25-18, 17-25, 25-7, 15-7 win over Grapeland.

In that matchup, Colvin had three kills, nine aces, six digs and a block, and scored 19 points.

For her performance in helping her team to a 3-1 district record last week, Skyler Colvin is the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com girls Player of the Week!

We began these awards at the beginning of the 2024 calendar year, and now we’ve had six this school year. If you’d like to look back these few weeks and read who’s won our awards so far this school year, here are links to those stories:

Another Friday night is coming, and Whataburger everywhere will be packed after volleyball and football – and rightfully so! Whataburger is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

But don’t wait until Friday to go. Here’s a link to set you up to look and check out what you want (I do that right after I walk out of the game): Whataburger | Order Online with Curbside and Delivery.

By the time we get to Whataburger, I know if I’m going with my favorite (the No. 1), or a spicy chicken sandwich, a great big chocolate shake to go with it, or something new, like a Dr. Pepper shake or the new Bacon Blaze Jalapeno Double – and yes, it is absolutely as great as it sounds. We even conveniently included an ad with a photo of it in this very article!

Don’t forget that at Whataburger, you don’t have to wait – breakfast is served beginning late at night (11 p.m.) through 11 a.m. every single day.

Congratulations again to Skyler Colvin of Overton’s Lady Mustangs, and to Javon Towns of the Kilgore Bulldogs!
