THE FLYOVER, SOFTBALL STYLE | Henderson, Gilmer, Troup, Tatum Arp and Overton all winners Friday

A trip to Gilmer earlier this week didn’t turn out well for Henderson’s softball Lady Lions.

And they were still kind of ticked about it on Friday.

Henderson scored 11 runs in the first inning on Friday night at home against Kilgore, and finished with a 16-1 win, shortened by the University Interscholastic League’s 10-run-rule.

Henderson held Kilgore to just the one run, scored in the third inning. Lexi Elmore walked to reach, went to second on a passed ball, then to third on a single by Kyler Harper-Fickett. Elmore scored when she stole home for the Lady Bulldogs’ only run. That single by Harper-Fickett was also the Lady ‘Dogs’ only hit of the game.

Cheyenne Jones took the loss for Kilgore, giving up 16 runs (only five of them earned) on 12 hits; she walked three and had one strikeout. Kilgore committed six errors in the game; Henderson, none.

Jacie Boothe got the win on the mound for coach John White’s Lady Lions – Boothe had a strikeout and allowed a walk in the short game. Addy Davis pitched an inning, allowing two walks and struck out one.

Boothe also shined at the plate, with a double and two singles and 2 RBI. Chloe Ellis had a double and a single and 2 RBI, and KK Brooks also had a double, with 2 RBI.

Jayda Brown had a single and 3 RBI; and Davis, McKenna Moon and Addy Standley all each had a single and an RBI.

Henderson is 16-5-1 with the win, and now 4-1 in District 16-4A. The Lady Lions will play at Carthage on Tuesday, then at Chapel Hill on Friday, beginning at 5 p.m. with junior varsity on both nights.

After getting its district record to 1-1, Kilgore’s Lady Bulldogs have lost three straight (to Pine Tree, to Spring Hill and then to Henderson). They’re 3-10 overall, 1-4 in district play and will try to reverse that trend on Tuesday. Kilgore hosts Gilmer Tuesday night, starting with JV at 5 p.m., and then have an open date on Friday.

Gilmer 10, Pine Tree 3: District 16-4A’s only unbeaten team, Gilmer’s Lady Buckeyes, remained unbeaten in district play – but had to have a comeback at home Friday night to do it.

The final score to this one is VERY deceiving: the Lady Pirates went up 2-0 in the first inning, and Gilmer cut that in half with a second-inning run (2-1). Pine Tree continued to lead by that score, then added a run in the top of the fifth for a 3-1 lead.

But in the bottom of the sixth, Gilmer opened the floodgates: NINE RUNS crossed the plate, sending the Lady Buckeyes in front for good, as PT couldn’t score in the seventh.

Pine Tree (7-13-1 overall, 3-3 in district play) would finish the game with five errors, to Gilmer’s none.

For Gilmer, Jayna Rucker hit two home runs and collected 3 RBI for the Lady Buckeyes, who sit atop 16-4A with a 5-0 record – they’re 15-2-2 overall this season. Kara Williams had a double and 2 RBI; Brie Jones had three singles and 2 RBI; Kennedy Jordan had a double; Alexis Kemp had a single and an RBI, and on the mound, had 10 strikeouts, walked two and allowed the three runs, all earned.

For Pine Tree, E.K. Holder had two singles and 3 RBI, all three of the Lady Pirates’ runs. Nia Woodson had a double.

On Tuesday, PT will host Spring Hill, then will host Chapel Hill on Friday.

Gilmer, as mentioned, will play at Kilgore on Tuesday, then will host Carthage on Friday.

Troup 15, West Rusk 4: There were fireworks in Troup on Friday night, as a couple of District 16-3A rivals met – and Kiyah Arterberry was responsible for a lot of ‘em.

Arterberry had a home run, a double, a single and 3 RBI for the Lady Tigers, in a run-rule-shortened game.

Taylor Gillispie, the reigning, defending Whataburger / ETBlitz.com girls Player of the Week, had 11 strikeouts and didn’t issue a walk in the four innings that the game lasted, and also had an RBI.

Makayla Spencer had a double, two singles and 2 RBI for the Lady Tigers. Heather Longino had a double and an RBI. Olivia Anderson had a single and 2 RBI, and Lilana Priest had an RBI.

For the Lady Raiders, Ayin Rocha had a double and an RBI; Dustyn Redden had two singles and an RBI; Genesis Mata had an RBI; and Kenlee Reasoner had six strikeouts and walked four in the loss.

This coming week, Troup (17-5 overall, 6-1 in district play), leading the district standings, steps out of district to play at Brook Hill School in Bullard on Monday, a 5 p.m. varsity-only night, and then takes Friday off.

West Rusk (0-5) will face Tatum twice: at Tatum on Tuesday, then at home against Tatum on Friday, starting at 4:30 p.m. with JV on both nights.

Tatum 5, Gladewater 3: Those same Tatum Lady Eagles were home Friday night against Gladewater, and had to overcome a great night at the plate for the Lady Bears to get this win.

In the loss for Gladewater, Alayah Gordon, Makayah Boone, Adyson Evans and Karlee Moses each hit a double; Evans also had a single; Gordon had 2 RBI and Boone had one.

Gordon pitched for Gladewater, giving up three walks and notching a strikeout in six innings.

For Tatum in the win, Lily Crawford and Brailey Smith each had two singles; Crawford had 2 RBI, Smith one. Noa Cart had a single and an RBI, and got the complete-game win on the mound, striking out four, allowing just one walk and six hits in the win.

Tatum (6-9 overall, 3-4 in 16-3A) meets West Rusk this coming week, as mentioned; Gladewater (6-10-1 overall, 3-3 in district) will play at White Oak on Tuesday, starting with the JV game at 4:30, then host the Lady’Necks on Friday, also with JV starting at 4:30.

Arp 17, White Oak 3: Arp’s Lady Tigers are red-hot, and have won four straight games now in district play with this road victory Friday night at White Oak.

Arp scored 10 runs in the first three innings and finished with 16 hits; White Oak scored all three of its runs in the third, and finished with six hits, and also had two errors.

Maddie Birdsong went 2-for-4 for Arp with a home run and a double, and 6 RBI. Addison Carpenter went 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI, and scored three runs. Neci Potts went 3-of-4 and added 2 RBI. Carpenter got the win on the mound, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits, and walked eight.

White Oak is 9-9-1 overall and 3-2 in district; the Lady’Necks had won three straight prior to two losses to Arp this past week. White Oak will host Gladewater Tuesday, and visit the Lady Bears on Friday, as mentioned.

Arp is 19-4-1 overall, and 6-1 in district play. The Lady Tigers face Sabine twice this coming week: at Sabine on Tuesday, and at Arp on Friday, varsity at 6 p.m.

Sabine was off this past week.

Overton 10, Harleton 0: The Lady Mustangs convincingly won their seventh straight game, remained unbeaten in District 19-2A and put their season win-total in double digits all in one night, as they shut out Harleton on Friday.

Overton (10-8-1 overall) is 6-0 in district play, and the Lady Mustangs take on Waskom two times this coming week: at Waskom on Tuesday, a 4:30 p.m. start, and at home on Friday, starting at 4.

Harleton has Ore City twice next week: on the road on Tuesday, then at home Friday.

The Lady Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the second, one in the fourth and six in the bottom of the fifth. They did have three errors, but had seven hits, and held Harleton (4-13 overall, ) to just three.
