TANNER BEETS, KC’S INMON | They’re the WHATABURGER / ETBLITZ.COM Players of the Week!

Kilgore’s Tanner Beets is shown here, doing what he’s usually doing: making a play. Beets is the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Boys Player of the Week for last week, the week of March 4-10, and Kilgore College’s Nyla Inmon is (once again) the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Ladies Player of the Week for last week. Neither of our player of the week honorees are really old enough to turn to their rivals and pull a page from the book of the late, great Toby Keith and fire out a taunt (Toby Keith – How Do You Like Me Now?), but they both had fantastic performances last week – even if one of them did so in defeat.

Every Tuesday, right here, we honor a female athlete and a male athlete as the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Girls Player of the Week and the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Boys Player of the Week.

And this week, neither left a lot of room for the competition.

How about Kilgore High School’s Tanner Beets?

The Diamond ‘Dogs, Kilgore’s baseball team, made the trek up to Mount Pleasant to compete in the Tiger Classic, and yeah – they got off to a bad start, ending a four-game winning streak with an 11-3 loss to Paris.

Kilgore needed a lift, and Beets helped give ‘em one. That’s what leaders do, right?

Beets went to the mound and pitched four strong innings of tournament ball: 77 pitches, 23 batters faced, allowed three runs but none of them earned, on five hits. He walked three, struck out four. And then he helped his own cause at the plate. He got two singles, had an RBI, and also drew a walk, and the Bulldogs won, 9-3.

And in the final game of the tournament, Kilgore faced Sulphur Springs, a team the ‘Dogs had beaten earlier this season, 18-2.

This time, though, it was a lot, lot closer.

Beets and Cade Cox would represent the only three runs scored in the game, as Kilgore would win a 3-2 tight one. In the bottom of the first, Beets singled to center, got to second on a passed ball and then scored on a hit by Tate Truman, giving Kilgore the early 1-0 lead.

Cox scored the second run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second, and after SS tied the game on a home run, Beets rallied the ‘Dogs with another single, then came around to score again. He stole second and scored on an RBI single by big Colt Bullard to left field, giving the Diamond ‘Dogs a 3-2 lead – the eventual final score.

For his efforts in the Tiger Classic, Tanner Beets is the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Boys Player of the Week.

Now, on to Ms. Nyla Inmon.

Kilgore College’s Nyla Inmon (From KCRANGERNATION.COM)

Inmon, who stars for the Kilgore College Lady Rangers, has already earned this honor once: she was named player of the week the second week the honor was presented, and she’s back again, this time, though, after a defeat.

But her performance in a recent loss at Tyler Junior College was so overwhelming, we couldn’t avoid recognizing it.

Inmon had 15 points and 20 rebounds in an ultra-physical battle at TJC last Saturday, the regular-season finale for both programs, in a 78-68 KC loss.

Inmon regularly shows up, saves her biggest performances, for the biggest games, and she did so again this time, and that’s why – for the week of March 4 through March 10, Nyla Inmon was once again the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Girls, or Ladies, Player of the Week.

And with the Lady Rangers playing Panola College in the quarterfinals of the Region XIV Conference Women’s Tournament Wednesday night at 8 p.m. at Floyd Wagstaff Gymnasium at Tyler Junior College, it wouldn’t surprise our staff whatsoever if Inmon is collecting this award again next week, hopefully in a winning cause.
