SABINE BOYS WIN DISTRICT TITLE | Cardinals win at Daingerfield; one more to go in regular season
The Sabine Cardinals have one game left in their basketball season – but they’ve already won the District 16-3A championship.
Coach Colby Carr’s team clinched the title with a 68-51 win at Daingerfield on Friday night, and they’re doing it in style: Sabine is undefeated in district play, 9-0, with one game left to play in the regular season: that’d be at home Tuesday night against Hughes Springs.
Subvarsity will begin around 5 p.m., and that’s also senior night. After that game, the regular season will be complete and the Cardinals (22-9 overall) will find out who their opponent will be in the first round of the University Interscholastic League’s Class 3A playoffs.
Friday night in Daingerfield, though, Sabine had a fight on its hands, at least for the first half. The Cardinals outscored Daingerfield by just three points, 15-12, but made some breathing room for themselves in the second quarter and led at the half, 30-20.
Sabine held the Tigers to just seven third-quarter points and that would be the difference in the game, as Daingerfield couldn’t overcome the slump.
Sabine got 23 points from Hudson McNatt, just a little more than nine days removed from being the ETBlitz.com boys player of the week. Colt Sparks scored 18 points. Dalton Taylor added 12, and Clayne Simmons scored eight.
