Things change quickly sometimes in sports, even in high school sports, and they’ve changed for the Overton High School baseball program today.

Overton, the only baseball team — well, the only team, period — from the ETBlitz.com coverage area still playing a season in the 2024-25 school year, will play Gary this week in the University Interscholastic League’s Class 2A, Division II playoffs.

That series had been scheduled to be played in its entirety at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall.

That has changed.

Now, the Mustangs will still face Gary in the UIL 2A-DII playoffs, in a best-of-three-game third-round series. But the site has changed. The series will now be played at Hallsville High School, a fantastic baseball facility.

Game one will be Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Gary the home team. Game two is Friday at 5, Overton the home team, and it’s early because if a game three is necessary to settle the series, it’ll follow game two, about 30 minutes after.

Gary’s Bobcats are 18-10, and have won four straight games. None of those games had Overton in the opposite dugout. Gary swept West Sabine in two games (6-5, 12-2), then swept Lovelady, as well (3-2 and 8-5).

Overton has won 12 straight games and is 25-6 overall. The Mustangs beat LaPoynor in a one-game winner-take-all series to open the playoffs, then beat James Bowie in two games (11-1, 5-0) to get to this point, the regional semifinals.

Our preview will be on ETBlitz.com on Thursday morning.
