OVERTON DUSTS OFF MARTIN’S MILL | OHS will meet Bowie in best-of-three starting Thursday in Winnsboro

TYLER – It was Mustangs versus Mustangs, but the Overton Lady Mustangs prevailed over the Martin’s Mill version, 12-3, at Tyler Legacy’s field Friday.
Overton (23-8-1) is now slated to take on James Bowie, a 12-5 winner over Rivercrest, in the second, or area, round of the UIL Class 2A playoffs. That will take place at Winnsboro in a best two-of-three series.
The first game is scheduled for Thursday, May 2 at 6 p.m. Game two will be played on Friday, May 3 at 5 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of the second game.
In the game against Martin’s Mill on Friday, freshman Kelsey Vaught stepped into the circle for Overton. The right-hander pitcher surrendered five hits and three runs over seven innings of work, striking out eight while walking only two.
Overton’s Lady Mustangs collected 11 hits in the game. Kasha Williams had 4 RBI and went one for three at the plate, a single. The Lady Mustangs pushed across seven runs in the bottom of the third. Kayla Nobles, Avery Smith, and Anna Perkins had two hits each.
Perkins had a double, a single and 2 RBI. Lila Gurley had a double and 2 RBI. Kayla Nobles had two singles and 2 RBI, and so did Avery Smith. Halle Mayfield had a double and an RBI and walked three times, and Kelsey Vaught had an RBI.
Vaught also got the win on the mound, going all seven innings, and recording eight strikeouts.
Overton didn’t commit a single error in the game.
The Lady Mustangs are continuing an athletic school year that has been fantastic, including the best football season in decades, a 35-win volleyball season, a 25-win boys basketball season, playoffs in girls basketball, a state championship in powerlifting (Kadden Williams), regionals in girls and boys golf, and baseball is still playing, as well.
