OVERTON CRUISES | Mustangs have big night all the way around, shut out Bowie, 34-0

OVERTON — Carlisle might have eaten the meal, so to speak, but it was Simms-Bowie that paid the check.
The Overton Mustangs came out of their locker room Thursday night and onto the field at Coach Chester Roy Stadium like a swarm of angry wasps after their nest got knocked to the ground. And they swarmed all over Bowie, a 34-0 smackdown that would’ve made The Rock himself proud.
One could say that, yes, coach Scotty Laymance’s Mustangs bounced back just fine from losing to Carlisle in what most would consider an upset a week ago.
Overton (2-1) will play another Thursday game next week, as they’ll visit Maud, a 7 p.m. start. Maud (0-2) has their work cut out for them tonight, as they’ll visit big running back Kaegan Ash and Mount Enterprise (2-0).
After what amounted to a feeling-out period in the first quarter, the scoring began with a bang: a 71-yard touchdown pass play from Rylan Holleman to Jacob Osburn.
Overton scored twice more in the half, with Gabe Miller adding a 40-yard run and Jackson Furlow scoring from 38 yards out, and led 20-0 at the break.
The Mustangs would get two more touchdowns in the second half for the final: Holleman found Justin Weir for a second touchdown pass, this one a 39-yarder, and then Holleman scored in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard QB run.
Defensively, Hunter Klima and Miller each had a sack and each had a hurry. Justin Weir caused a fumble and Elijah Dorsey had a recovery. Overton’s defense had five tackles loss, with Dorsey, Eathen Oates, Gunnar Whitfield, Miller and Klima each having one. Klima and Kason Hawkins led the defense with 12 tackles each; Weir had 11; Oates and Brody Brown each had nine; Ty Steddum had eight, and Miller had seven.
