OVERTON BOWS OUT | Beckville gets by Mustangs in round two of playoffs (w/gallery)

HALLSVILLE – The Overton Mustangs dropped a close 45-42 game against the 3rd-ranked Beckville Bearkats in the University Interscholastic League’s Class 2A Region III boys basketball area round playoffs Friday night at Hallsville High School Coliseum.
The Mustangs went on a 9-0 run and Beckvile did not tally their first points until midway through the first period. Beckville went on a 10-2 run with Overton holding an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Overton and Beckville battled evenly in the second quarter, each scoring 13 points. Overton took the lead into the dressing room at half 24-23.
The Mustangs pushed out to a 36-33 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Beckville tied the game 42-42 at 2:07. Beckville to the lead with 28.6 seconds left to play 44-42. Overton was forced to foul to put the Bearkats at the free-throw line with 9.5 seconds left to play. Beckville made the first but missed the second and Overton got the rebound. Brody Brown’s pointer missed the mark with 2.8 seconds left.
For Overton, Rylan Holleman led the Mustangs with 12 points, followed by Bryce Still with 12 and Isaiah Hawkins with 8 points. Overton finished the year 25-5.
For Beckville, Jorden Prince had 17 points.
