Turns out, them Kilgore boys are pretty good when they show up on the big stage.

Kilgore High School senior Braydon Nelson journeyed to the capitol city of Texas on Friday and gave it a go in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, specifically the discus throw at the University of Texas in Austin.

He didn’t win the thing.

But he did finish second.

“He had a really good series of throws,” Kilgore coach T.J. Gillen-Hall told ETBlitz.com on Saturday.

That he did. Nelson’s best – a throw of 183 feet, 9 inches – topped them.

“(That wasn’t) a personal best,” Gillen-Hall said, “but just three inches off. He had two others over 180 and 179.”

Evan Martinez of Arlington Lamar had the best, topping Nelson but only by a foot – 184 feet, 9 inches.

In 2022, Kilgore’s own Matthew Tyeskie competed in the 110 meter hurdles in the Texas Relays, winning the title, and then went on to more success in the UIL State Track & Field Meet, also at UT.

Sam Black of Sabine was in Friday’s discus, too. Black was 20th with a best of 149 feet, 6 inches. Black actually topped that last week in the Arp meet, with a best of 155 feet, 4 inches.

Black performed even better in the shot put at the Texas Relays on Saturday. Black finished ninth in the state, a best of 54 feet, 6 ½ inches (Black also topped that at the Arp meet, a school-record 55 feet, 1 ½ inches).

A handful of other ETBlitz-area athletes were at the Texas Relays, as well. Several of these results are from Saturday.

  • Trae Davis of Troup finished seventh in the long jump – 6 feet, 9.2 inches. Davis is a football signee with Kansas State, a wide receiver.
  • Gladewater’s girls 400 meter relay team finished seventh in that event, in 49.16 seconds – the team of Jerrica Gilmore, Paytin Thompson, Kyla Lincoln and Peyton Hunter.
  • The Gladewater 800 meter relay team of Hadassah Balcorta, Gilmore, Lincoln and Thompson finished 26th in that event on Friday.
  • Troup’s 400 meter relay team of Brett Wells, Caden Claburn, Bryce Wallum and Davis finished ninth (42.89 seconds).
  • Kingston Sheffield of Gladewater finished 12th in the boys triple jump (13.53 seconds).
  • The team of Kooper Bogenschutz, Ella Roberts, Kiera Mims and Sarah Roberts ran in the 4X400 (1,600 meter, or mile) relay, and finished 43rd with a time of 4 minutes, 20.32 seconds.
