NELSON, LOFTIS & STEVENS | It’s not a law firm; they’re the Whataburger / ETBlitz Players of the Week!

Overton's Kaylee Stevens won three events at the District 22-2A track meet last week, and Sabine's Sadie Loftis (below) won three, as well, at a meet in Arp. Both girls are being named the Whataburger Girls Player of the Week for their efforts! And also honored is Braydon Nelson (inset), who took second place in the state in discus at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays last weekend at the University of Texas in Austin. Congratulations to all three! Braydon Nelson went to Austin to compete in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays last weekend.

Little did he know he’d come back with a second-place statewide finish – and a player of the week award.

But he did just that. And the girls award-winner this week also comes from performances at a track meet – in fact, THEY come from TWO meets.

For the first time ever, we have a tie for the Whataburger Player of the Week, and it’s in the girls division.

Sabine’s Sadie Loftis and Overton’s Kaylee Stevens each won three events at differing track meets this past week – Loftis at a meet in Arp, and Stevens at the District 22-2A meet in Alto.

And while we would have loved to have narrowed it down, it was difficult for us to quantify if a long-distance runner has a more difficult, or less difficult, job than a hurdler, etc. On top of that, there were other strong candidates for girls player/athlete of the week: Loftis’s Sabine teammate, Sarah Roberts; West Rusk softball standout Kyrsten Price; and more.

Stevens competed for Overton in the 22-2A meet at Alto last week, and won the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles, and then also won the triple jump, a big reason why Overton’s Lady Mustangs were the girls team district track champions for what’s believed to be the first time in school history.

Stevens took first in the 100 meter hurdles in 17 seconds flat. She won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 52.81 seconds, and then won the triple jump with 31 feet, even.

Loftis, representing the Lady Cardinals last week in Arp, and while she was one of several Lady Cards to come up big, we thought Loftis shined more than anyone: a win in the 800 meter run in 2 minutes, 35.66 seconds; a win in the mile run, in 5 minutes, 51.90 seconds, and a win in the two-mile run in 12 minutes, 40 seconds.

Here at ETBlitz.com for the players of the week, we vote. And we voted here, and couldn’t really come to a consensus. It was still tied.

Rather than break the tie, we decided to make both girls our Whataburger Girls Player of the Week for the week of Monday, March 25 to Saturday, March 30.

Like Kadden Williams the previous week, Kilgore’s Braydon Nelson didn’t leave a lot of room for the competition.

Nelson had the second-best discus throw in the state last week at the Clyde Littlefield Relays at the University of Texas in Austin campus.

Nelson finished with a best throw of 183 feet, 9 inches, only beaten out by a foot, exactly – a throw of 184 feet, 9 inches by Arlington Lamar’s Evan Martinez.

And with the District 17-4A meet this Wednesday and Thursday at Spring Hill High in Longview, Nelson would obviously be the favorite to claim the district title in the first of a few steps that could bring him back to Austin for the UIL State Track & Field Championships next month.

For his performance in the Texas Relays and a second-place finish in the state in discus, Nelson is our Whataburger Boys Player of the Week, for March 25-30.

Don’t forget – we know you can’t – about Whataburger when you’re out on the road, after church, after the game, on the way to work in the morning. They’re there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and you can see their huge menu right here: Whataburger | Order Online with Curbside and Delivery.

By the way, they’ve got a new burger: the Bacon Steakhouse Double. And it’s amazing. Not one but two hamburger patties, topped with fried onions and bacon, aged cheddar cheese and an out-of-this-world steak sauce.

Whataburger is our sponsor for the players of the week each week, and here’s the complete list, along with Nelson, Loftis and Stevens:

Congratulations again to Sadie Loftis, Kaylee Stevens and Braydon Nelson for winning this week’s honors!
