MUSTANGS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT! | Still, Edwards, and that ‘D’ get Overton out of Grapeland

One of the hottest teams in football in East Texas, in any classification, is Overton.

The Mustangs went 10-2 last year, and it took Mart – the 2A powerhouse – to take Overton out in the second round of the UIL Class 2A playoffs.

Here’s a stat, for all you “stat-lovers:” since August, 2023, when Scotty Laymance became head coach of the Mustangs, they’ve gone 14-3. That’s right, and one of them was Mart.

That’s almost ridiculous.

And Grapeland couldn’t get it done Friday night, either.

The Sandies had their chances, but there was too much Bryce Still, too much Jayden Edwards. And that will be the end of a LOT of teams Overton plays by the end of the 2024 season.

Still, who already has one Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Player of the Week to his credit, was just stupid-good Friday night in Grapeland, and Edwards was, too – both of them were.

Edwards had 10 catches for 281 yards – folks, that’s almost three football fields – and four touchdown catches.

For that to happen, Still had to go crazy and he did: 24-of-37 for 405 yards, and five touchdowns.

Jacob Osburn had six catches for 66 yards and a score; Bryson Bobbit had five for 47 yards; and Justin Weir had three for 11 yards.

And the Mustangs also ran for 90 yards and a score. Still led the way: 42 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Weir had 29 yards on nine carries and Gabriel Miller, 19 yards on seven carries.

Defensively, Edwards had two interceptions. Miller had two sacks, Kash Holleman had a hurry, and Weir, just a sophomore, had nine tackles. Eathen Oates and Braxton Harper each had eight, and Oates, Hunter Klima, Miller, and Trevor Stinecipher each had a tackle for loss.

Laymance and the Mustangs are now 4-1, have won four straight, and they’re 1-0, of course, in District 11-2A, Division II. They’ll host Tenaha – a surprising 1-4 this season – this Thursday at 7 p.m., at Coach Chester Roy Stadium.
