McCARTHY WON’T RETURN AS COWBOYS COACH | Contract expires tomorrow; won’t be back

On ETBlitz.com, we talk about what you’re talking about.

And what East Texas is talking about today is the Dallas Cowboys.

The Mike McCarthy era is over in Dallas.

McCarthy’s coaching contract ends tomorrow with the Cowboys, and it will not be renewed, various media outlets are reporting on Monday morning.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reported that the stickling point of negotiations that fell through between McCarthy and the Cowboys was the length of the contract. McCarthy, then, won’t return for a sixth season. He was 49-35 through five seasons, and missed the playoffs in the most recent one, finishing third in the NFC East Division behind winner Philadelphia and wild-card team Washington.

McCarthy was once the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. He replaced the great Mike Holmgren as head coach of the Green Bay Packers, where he won the Super Bowl there in 2010 over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He retired for a short while, and then led the Cowboys to three straight seasons of 12-4 in 2021, 2022 and 2023 before finishing 7-10 this season, missing the playoffs.

The Chicago Bears had requested to interview McCarthy for their own coaching vacancy, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones denied that request, in lieu of their own talks with McCarthy, whose contract expires on Jan. 14. But now McCarthy will be free to meet with the Bears, since he won’t be returning to Dallas.

Where will the Cowboys turn? At this point, there are more questions than answers.
