Today is the first day on the job officially as Gladewater ISD’s new athletic director and head football coach for Jermaine Lewis.

Lewis was named AD and head coach on Monday in a unanimous vote of the Gladewater ISD Board of Trustees.

The decision was first announced by The Gladewater Mirror.

Lewis, 45, was already on staff at Gladewater High School, has been for 14 years, and replaces the departing Jonny Louvier, who resigned Feb. 4 and is leaving coaching.

In a statement, Lewis said, “This is a tremendous opportunity and I look forward to working alongside our dedicated coaches, student athletes, and the entire Gladewater community. Gladewater has a rich tradition of athletic excellence, and I am committed to building on that legacy.”

Lewis added that he couldn’t wait to get started.

Lewis and his wife Keshia Green-Lewis have two children: Kollin, a student at the University of North Texas, and Lankstyn, a student at Gladewater High. Keshia is also an educator, a Special Education teacher at Weldon Elementary, a part of Gladewater ISD.

From the football perspective, Lewis and his coaching staff return a great deal of talent. The backfield is just ridiculous, with running backs Carsin Cooper – a junior – and sophomore Tray Watts both returning.

Tight end and linebacker Mason Budro comes back, as does quarterback Luke Brown, receiver Brayson Woods, sophomore free safety and wide receiver Anthony Sanchez, junior corner Maddaxx Vasquez and sophomore Amarion Minter – all are back.

The Bears just missed the playoffs in a very tough district.

Lewis will oversee an athletic department that includes a fantastic track and field program, and an up-and-coming baseball program that’s a strong contender for a district title right now.

Lewis is actually in his second stint at Gladewater High School. He once was the head coach of the Bears’ basketball program.

The former Houston Wheatley High standout played at Kilgore College, and then at UNLV.
