You’re already there with some of the best football players in the state of Texas.

So if you get named THE best defensive player there, what does that make you?

Kilgore High School cornerback Jayden Sanders, who will be a senior for coach Clint Fuller’s Bulldogs this coming fall, made the trip with the 7-on-7 squad to play in the Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament this past week in College Station.

The Bulldogs played three pool games, won the top seed in Division II, and made it all the way to the semifinals before bowing out. And Sanders?

He was named to the all-tournament team by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football this weekend, winning the most valuable defensive player honors in the entire tournament (The 2024 DCTF All-State 7-on-7 Team (texasfootball.com)).

Kilgore went 5-1 in the tournament, beating Dallas Kimball and Graham on the first day, before thunderstorms put a halt to everyone’s Thursday. Kilgore picked up with its final pool game on day two at 9 a.m., beating Hamshire-Fannett in overtime right off the bat.

Kilgore then reeled off three straight wins over Lumberton, Alvarado and finally Lubbock Christian, that final one in overtime, before having to hustle over across the Veterans Park complex to face Hamshire-Fannett again. H-F won the rematch in the DII semifinals, then went on to beat Dumas, 18-0, in the DII finals.

So Kilgore’s only loss on its entire trip was a six-point (14-6) loss to the eventual state champion that Kilgore had beaten earlier in the day.

And one of the Bulldogs was named the defensive MVP to boot.

Not a bad trip, not at all.
