KILGORE’S CHRISTIAN, LC’S WHEAT… | Lots more area athletes qualify for state track meet (UPDATE NO. 2; AWAITING 3A RESULTS)

Well, we’re finally back.

Earlier today, ETBlitz.com reported that Gilmer’s Lucas Cano, competing with his teammates in the Class 4A, Region II meet at Texas A&M-Commerce, had qualified for the state track & field meet in discus, and that Overton’s Christian Hall had also qualified for the state meet with his performance in the 2A, Region III meet at Palestine High School.

We’re happy to report that there are MORE STATE QUALIFIERS from our area!

Not only is Cano now a double-qualifier – he won the boys 4A shot put after our earlier update – but he was joined by Kilgore’s Cam Christian, who finished second!

Also headed to the state meet: Gilmer’s Brendan Webb!

Webb will compete in Austin in the 110 meter hurdles (see below).

Make room for the Kilgore 800 meter relay team on the bus to the state meet, too! The team of Takieran White, Jayden Sanders, Lakeyleon Graves, and Carsyn Bynum is who we had, officially, running the event, but we’ll double-check.

Leverett’s Chapel might be little, but the Lions have heart. And they have Trent Wheat, who will throw for LC in the shot put in 1A at the state meet.

Don’t forget the girls: Gilmer’s Alondria Nelson, come on down! She’ll be in Austin in the 200 meter dash. And Gilmer’s girls 1,600 (mile relay)? Yeah, they’re going, too!

We promised you another update, and here it is – apologies that it’s late, but it was an attempt by our team to get in as many results as possible.

Here are results since our earlier story involving athletes from the 12 high schools in the ETBlitz.com coverage area: Arp, Gilmer, Gladewater, Henderson, Kilgore, Leverett’s Chapel, Overton, Sabine, Tatum, Troup, West Rusk, and White Oak.

We do not have an update from Whitehouse here; we’ll try to get one on Easter Sunday and have it for you here on ETBlitz.com.

The top two finishers in each event move on from regionals to the University Interscholastic League State Track & Field Championships at the University of Texas in Austin, specifically at Mike A. Myers Stadium, on May 1-3.

CLASS 4A

Boys shot put: As mentioned above, both Cano and Christian are headed to Austin, Cano in the discus and the shot, and Christian in the shot.

Cano got it done in both, as we reported earlier in the discus (TRACK REGIONAL UPDATE | Overton’s Hall, Gilmer’s Cano to state! (UPDATE 1)), and then in the shot. He had a best of 63 feet, 2 inches in the shot, and Christian – following in the footsteps of so many Kilgore High School throwers, most recently Braydon Nelson – took second, with a throw of 50 feet, 7 inches. Derion Andrews, Cano’s Gilmer teammate, was fourth with a throw 49 feet, 7 ¼ inches.

Girls shot put: Kilgore’s Makayla Jackson finished 10th overall, a best of 33 feet, 8 ¾ inches. Madeline Ackers of Godley won the event with a throw of 43 feet, 10 ¼ inches, and Aubrianna Jordan of Hillsboro qualified with a second-place finish, a throw of 41 feet, 1 inch.

High jump: Both Webb and Kilgore’s Jacory Walton competed in this event. Webb came in fifth (6 feet, 4 inches), Walton, ninth (6 feet, 2 inches). The winner actually came from the same district: Pine Tree’s Tydaryn Peters, who took first with a best of 6 feet, 6 inches.

Girls 400 meter relay: Gilmer’s girls finished third in the time of 47.89 seconds.

Boys 400 meter relay: The Henderson Lions finished fourth, in the time of 42.17 seconds.

Boys 800 meter run: Kilgore’s Luciano Brizuela was 14th (2 minutes, 12.66 seconds).

Boys 110 meter hurdles: And here was Webb’s time to shine.

The multi-sport Buckeye darn near won the thing. He was across the finish line in 14.33 seconds, as Dallas Lincoln’s Roy Hughes BARELY edged him out (14.10 seconds). Still, Webb is headed to state in the 110s.

Girls 800 meter relay: Gilmer was third here (1 minute, 41.22 seconds).

Boys 800 meter relay: So Celina won this event in 1:26.68, and Kilgore was virtually right at them, at 1:26.72. We had this team, as mentioned, as White, Sanders, Graves, and Bynum. If we left someone out, our apologies and we will fix it.

Gilmer was third (1:27.29) and Henderson, sixth (1:30.46).

Boys 300 meter hurdles: Gilmer’s Tru Griffin-Wilson just missed qualifying in this one: he was third (38.77 seconds). Hughes again, of Lincoln, won it (36.70 seconds) and Abraham Coles Jr.  of Kennedale was second (36.77).

Girls 200 meter dash: Gilmer’s Nelson didn’t win it, but she did qualify for state with a second-place finish (25.16 seconds). Lincoln’s Naomi Jones won and barely beat Nelson (25.10 seconds).

Girls 1,600 meter (mile) run: Henderson’s Giselle Alejandro has had a brilliant career for Lions in track and in cross country. She finished fourth in this event Saturday, in 5 minutes, 28.78 seconds. Gilmer’s Alondra Dominguez was eighth (5:37.61).

Girls 1,600 (mile) relay: Dallas Carter won it (3 minutes, 53.51 seconds) but Gilmer’s in, too, in the time of 3:55.97.

Boys 1,600 (mile) relay: Kilgore’s team finished seventh, in the time of 3:25.56.

Girls 100 meter dash: Gilmer’s Tasiyah Lewis finished one spot out of qualifying, finishing third (11.99 seconds). Frisco Panther Creek’s Nautica-Marie Tunstel won, in 11.97 seconds.

Boys 100 meter dash: Gilmer’s Trillyon Butler was seventh (10.99 seconds). Kilgore’s Carsyn Bynum was in the event, as well, fifth in the preliminaries, just not in the top seven in the finals.

Boys 100 meter dash, wheelchair: Henderson’s Lane Meador finished in 25.46 seconds.
