KILGORE BOWS OUT IN 7-ON-7 STATE SEMIS | Bulldogs earn top seed, win first five before loss
Kilgore looked far and away like the most talented team in Division II at the Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament Thursday and Friday in College Station, and did have a win over the eventual DII state champion, Hamshire-Fannett. That’s because the Bulldogs and H-F were in the same pool.
Kilgore won two pool games on Thursday (over Dallas Kimball and Graham), but the entire thing was put on hold Thursday around 4:35 p.m. when thunderstorms hit the Veterans Park area. So the pool games, which were used to seed the tournament, resumed first thing Friday morning. Kilgore played Hamshire-Fannett at 9 a.m. and won in overtime, then Kilgore won its first two championship bracket games, beating Lumberton, 13-6, and Alvarado, 20-0, to reach the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinal game was against Lubbock Christian, a battle that went to overtime, as well, before Kilgore took it by a point, 26-25, to advance to the semifinals.
The field that the semifinals would be played on, however, was across the complex, a complex with at least 13 fields, and it would be H-F again. This time, H-F would score first, and deal Kilgore a 14-6 loss. H-F would beat Dumas, 18-0, in the DII state title game to win that division’s 7-on-7 state crown.
Here’s a look back at scenes from Kilgore’s four games in just under four hours on Friday, by ETBlitz.com’s Mitch Lucas.
Thanks so much for the great coverage of the tournament.
