A LOOK AT COLLINSVILLE (Booo!) | Let’s take a look at Overton’s opponent in Thursday’s 2A-DII baseball state title game

To win the game, you’ve gotta know and understand your opponent. Today, in preparation for Thursday’s UIL Class 2A, Division II state baseball championship game, we take a look at the Collinsville Pirates. In case you somehow haven’t heard, Overton High School is facing Collinsville High on Thursday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock for the UIL Class 2A, Division II state baseball championship, a 9 a.m. first pitch.

Instead of looking at both the Overton High School Mustangs and their opponent in Thursday’s state title game in one story, we’re going to do things a little differently.

We’ll talk about Overton on Tuesday. We know ‘em, we love ‘em, and we’ll get to them, how to watch the game if you’re not going, where to park if you are, and all that good stuff.

Today, why don’t we take a look at the bad guys?

Let’s look at Collinsville.

Cue the Darth Vader theme, Imperial March, composed by John Williams.

That’s better. Now we’re in the mood, because for our purposes, Overton is the home team; the Mustangs are the good guys. Collinsville? They’re not.

But boy, are they impressive.

The Pirates come in with a 31-4 record, and three of those four losses were in tournament play. They didn’t lose a single game in District 11-2A, going 15-0 in district. They haven’t lost a district game since 2023.

The three losses earlier in the year were to Callisberg, Central Heights, and Sanger. It’s ironic that one of those losses was to Heights – the Blue Devils are coached by Travis Jackson, the former Overton head coach who led them to the state tournament the last time they were there.

The Pirates’ fourth loss and most recent came back on May 8, a playoff loss to Windthorst, the first game of that best-of-three-game series.

Collinsville’s playoff run kind of imitates Overton’s just a bit.

Overton had La Poynor first, a one-game series (because La Poynor tried to catch Overton off-guard; they only wanted a one-gamer because they thought they had a better chance, won a flip to do so, and then lost the game). The Mustangs beat La Poynor, then swept Bowie. Gary beat Overton in the first game, then Overton bounced back for back-to-back wins to take the series.

The Mustangs beat Beckville in two, then went all three with Burton to get to this point.

Collinsville beat Celeste (and how – 18-5) in a one-gamer, then lost game one to Windthorst, 3-2, before winning 9-4 in game two, and a 14-13 game-three nailbiter.

The Pirates swept Crawford, Muenster and Stamford to reach this Thursday’s championship game.

So both Collinsville and Overton had their way with opponents and both struggled in at least one round; Collinsville’s struggles came in round two.

The Pirates are coached by Derrick Jenkins, who’s in his third season as head coach, with 426 career wins, and oh, by the way, they won 40 games a year ago, and captured the 2A-Division II state championship.

If the Pirates win Thursday’s game at Dell Diamond, they’ll have won back-to-back state titles. They beat Hawley last year.

Collinsville is seeking its third state championship in its program history; they also won one back in 1999. The Pirates are at the state tournament for the fifth time (1998, ’99, 2023, ’24, and ’25); Jenkins is in his seventh appearance. They are currently 31-4.

Four players returned from that title team for this year: Cash Morgan, a senior this year who was a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association Super Elite Team; catcher Peyton Davidson, a junior and the team’s catcher who was the District 11-2A defensive player of the year; senior Garrett Trevino, a pitcher and outfielder who was first-team all-district; and sophomore Jaxon Jenkins, a sophomore second baseman and pitcher and second-team all state on the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Collinsville swept Stamford in a series played at Stephenville.

During that series, Morgan was pretty confident in an interview with TV station KTEN.

“Yeah, it’s been pretty great,” Morgan said. “Preseason we were kind of counted out, I think they had us at 17th. And we really believed we were the best team in the state and the best program. I said it last year after we won it that we would be back here. No problem, ready to go and here we are in the same again in the same boat, ready to go win it.”
