Gladewater High School’s Kingston Sheffield, pictured here in a photo from late April, took the gold at the UIL State Track & Field Championships in Austin on Thursday, and Sabine’s Sam Black medaled, as well, taking silver in the 3A boys discus. They join Gilmer’s Lucas Cano (4A boys shot) and White Oak’s Kyler Priest (3A boys pole vault) who both won gold today. The meet continues into tonight, with running events; we’ll be back with another update later. Here’s our second update of the day from the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Track & Field Championships, the state high school track meet.

Earlier today, we broke the news that White Oak’s Kyler Priest had won gold in the Class 3A boys pole vault, and that Lucas Cano had won, as expected, the Class 4A boys shot put.

We have another state champion: Gladewater’s Kingston Sheffield went nuts, a best of 49 feet, 2 ¾ inches in the boys 3A triple jump, taking the gold!

Second place went to Briggs Jones of Wall (48 feet, 2 ¾ inches), and third went to Ralph Miller of Scurry-Rosser (46 feet, 8 ¼ inches). Arp’s Demarcus Wade finished fifth (45 feet, 6 ½ inches).

There’s a silver medalist in the area, too: Sabine’s Sam Black, who competed twice today. Black finished second – by just one inch – in the 3A boys discus, a best of 180 feet, 10 inches. Ty Domel of East Bernard bested Black by just the inch, 180 feet, 11 inches, or Black would be holding a gold. Sweetwater’s Hassani Myers was third (169 feet, 7 inches), and Troup’s A.J. Dewberry was sixth (155 feet, 11 inches).

Congratulations to Sam for bringing home the silver!

Athletes from all over the state – many from programs in the ETBlitz.com coverage area – in 4A and 3A are continuing the meet throughout the day. It’ll resume on Friday with athletes in Class 2A, the wheelchair division and Class 5A, and on Saturday, the state meet concludes with Classes 1A and 6A.

Again, here’s our complete list of events and times for the athletes from the schools in our coverage area: includes all of their events and the times that they compete: STATE TRACK MEET STARTS TODAY | 3A & 4A events today, 2A tomorrow; here’s a complete schedule in time order of when locals compete. Several of them have now already competed.

The meet is at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin. Watch it streaming live online here (Live Stream UIL Sports | NFHS Network), although there is a subscription fee.

There will be at least one more update today on ETBlitz.com, as running finals are all about to begin.
