Talk about punctuating your signing day.

Troup High School’s Carson Davenport got the opportunity to do something Monday that few have an opportunity to do: he got to play in a game on the same day he signed a letter of intent.

And when opportunity knocked, Davenport didn’t just open the door – he blew it off the hinges.

Davenport signed a letter of intent to continue his education and baseball career at Nelson University in Waxahachie on Monday, surrounded by family, friends, faculty members and coaches.

Troup High baseball moved its game that had been scheduled for Tuesday a day back, and Davenport and the Tigers took the field against Arp.

Davenport hit a signing day home run.

Troup scored four runs in the first inning Monday in the District 16-3A game, and doubled that over the next six, finishing with an 8-2 win in District 16-3A play. Davenport’s homer was a two-run shot.

Nelson University may have very well hit a home run themselves, figuratively, by signing Carson.

In 21 at-bats this year for the Troup Tigers, Carson is batting .429, with two doubles, a triple, a home run, and 4 RBI.

On the mound, he’s thrown 10 innings, and a 2.1 ERA.

Nelson is an NAIA school, and the Lions’ baseball team actually won NAIA Team of the Week nationally last week. Nelson competes in the Sooner Athletic Conference, along with programs like LSU-Shreveport, Oklahoma Panhandle State, Arlington Baptist and Wayland Baptist.

That’ll be Davenport’s concern next year. For now, he’s focused on his studies and his senior year. And up next on the baseball field that’s the Douglass Tournament, against Central, Groveton, Douglass and Lovelady this weekend.

“He’s an unbelievable kid,” said Troup coach Drew Walley. “He’s proven that with a lot of things, especially his work ethic. He’s gotten so much better coming in as a freshman with zero confidence, and now he’s out there flying around, burning it up. We’re proud of him, and all of our kids.”
