KILGORE BEATS CHAPEL HILL, 30-6! | This was our live, real-time update from Forney; more coverage to come
EDITOR’S NOTE: Most of the ETBlitz.com crew is here at Forney at City Bank Stadium, for the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 4A-Division I Region 3 finals between Kilgore (11-2, the home team) and Chapel Hill (10-3). The winner faces either La Vernia or Bay City next week, playoff information still to be determined. ETBlitz’s Mitch Lucas will be live shortly before kickoff, covering the game as it happens, and then there will be a game story by Joe Hale later.
We’ll be back shortly before kickoff!
- OK, we’re on, five minutes before the kick. Kilgore just took the field, and we’re about to have National Anthem.
- Kilgore, as the home team, has a huge crowd. Chapel Hill not so much, but it’s just now 7:30.
- Kilgore in their home red jerseys with white numbers and lettering “KILGORE” on the front of the jersey; black pants. Both teams are the Bulldogs — we’re going to be careful with that and try to not confuse you guys.
- KHS will get the kickoff, and Chapel Hill to start the second half.
- It’s a squib kick, and Kilgore will begin its first possession at its own 40-yard-line.
- Rayshaun Williams gets a carry on first down, but just for a yard.
- Jacory Walton loses a yard on second down, on a pass. It’s third and 10.
- Williams gets the call again, this time on a draw play, a delayed handoff, and gets just enough for the first down, exactly 10 yards.
- On the first down, though, Williams, trying to escape, is thrown for a massive 11-yard loss. It’s second and 21 from the 39.
- An incomplete pass, and now it’s third and 21.
- Williams again on a handoff, but this time it’s nothing doing. He’s out of bounds at the 39, no gain at all.
- Eddie Jiminez hits a fantastic punt, though, and it travels 48 yards with no return. Chapel Hill takes over at its own 13.
- By the way, Demetrius Brisbon, who was absent from the lineup for most of the season for Chapel Hill, is the starting quarterback tonight.
- A FUMBLE, and Chapel Hill loses it. Cameron Christian gets it for Kilgore at the Chapel Hill 16-yard-line.
- Williams for no gain on the sideline, or maybe 1 yard.
- Second-down is an incomplete pass to Walton into the end zone. It’s third and 9, at Chapel Hill’s 15.
- Oh my gosh: Kilgore quarterback Kayson Brooks scrambles, and all the way to the 1, but they’ve ruled he fumbled: Chapel Hill ball at its own 2, recovered by Tyrell Jones.
- Two turnovers so far and we’re not even four minutes in.
- Malik Gee now in at quarterback for Chapel Hill, who apparently is going to swap out.
- Kilgore’s defensive front is swarming on Chapel Hill. They’re in third and 9 at they’re own 3.
- Time out, Chapel Hill, with 7:01 left in the first quarter.
- Running back Rickey Stewart, the Texas signee, gets free, but only to about the 7, for about 5 yards.
- It’s fourth and 5, with Dre’ Sanders back to return the punt.
- But no he won’t. It’s a FAKE. Trevor Brooks, who doubles as the punter and the linebacker, runs free and gets the first down at their own 16.
- Gutsy call or stupid, but it resulted in a first down.
- Nothing for Sterwart on first or second down. We’re in third and 7 at Chapel Hill’s 19, Chapel Hill with the ball.
- Now it’s a false start, by Elton Calico. That moves Chapel Hill back to a third and 12 at the 14.
- Brisbon, back in at quarterback because we’re apparently going to play musical chairs tonight, is incomplete on his third-down pass and it’s fourth down again. Brooks’ punt goes away from Dre’ Sanders and rolls to Kilgore’s 35, a 51-yard punt.
- Kilgore opens its second possession there, with 4:16 left in the first quarter.
- Walton makes a grab from Brooks and gets to the 40, for 5 yards.
- Brooks takes off on a designed QB run, and runs for 26 yards to the Chapel Hill 34. Huge play.
- Isaiah Watters follows for a 20-yard carry, and a first down at Chapel Hill’s 14.
- A facemask on the next play by Chapel Hill sets Kilgore up at the 5, a first-and-goal.
- Watters catches a 2-yard pass on second-and-goal, a TOUCHDOWN, KILGORE. The extra point looked to be blocked, but it was for sure no good, and Kilgore leads CHHS, 6-0, with 2:20 left in the first quarter, a drive of just 1 minute, 57 seconds.
- Kilgore attempts a squib kick or an onside kick, but either way, it fails, and Chapel Hill has it at its own 46. Mmmm, yuck.
- Stewart picks up absolutely nothing, except maybe turf burn, on a first-down run.
- Chapel Hill continues to swap out at QB, and Gee throws long; it’s PICKED OFF, an interception by Ja’Kalen Sheffield, inside Kilgore’s 10.
- Three plays later, Brooks goes BOMBS AWAY downfield for 49 yards to Lakeyleon Graves, all the way down to Chapel Hill’s 16. We’ve spent an inordinate amount of time there in this game.
- And that ends the first quarter, with Kilgore up 6-0, and threatening.
- Check that: they’re no longer threatening. Kilgore just scored, a 15-yard TOUCHDOWN from Brooks to Graves, on the first play of the second quarter. Eddie Jiminez hits the point after and gives KHS a 13-0 lead.
- The squib kick by Isaac Jamaica gets by Chapel Hill’s front line and is recovered by Ja’Corian Wade, but all the way back at Chapel Hill’s 23.
- They are literally swapping quarterbacks every play. Brisbon runs to the 28 for 5.
- Stewart hits the hole and gets a few, but he’s tackled short of the first down, at the 32.
- Brisbon has the first down on a QB run, all the way to the 40 for 8.
- Jamarian Duncan Morgan runs Brisbon out of bounds on the first down play after just 2 yards.
- Brisbon this time down the CH sideline, for 7. They’re back in third and short at their own 49.
- Brisbon for the first down, but just 2 yards on the run.
- Two plays later, and CH is in third and 7 at Kilgore’s 46: Brisbon tries to hurry a pass off, but the receiver drops the pass. It’s fourth and 7, same spot.
- It’s a delay of game penalty on Chapel Hill, a 5-yard penalty, back to the CH 49.
- The punt goes into the end zone for the touchback. Kilgore will take over at its own 20 with 8:59 left in the half.
- Brooks fakes a handoff to Watters and throws to Javon Towns on a crossing route; Towns gets 15 on the pass, to the 35.
- Looked like the next play was maybe a busted play, but Brooks makes the most of it. He’s down after a 2-yard gain, but it could’ve been a loss.
- Watters on the next play to the 45, for a first down.
- Watters again, for just three. Second down and 7 coming up.
- Brooks goes long down the CH sideline to Jayden Sanders, who’s covered. Sanders almost caught it — he tipped it and almost knocked it down and caught it. Instead, it’s third and 7 at the Kilgore 48.
- Kilgore is in fourth and about 5, at the 50.
- Wow — Kilgore was waiting on the signal for the next play, and a flag came down. Chapel Hill was just called for unsportsmanlike conduct, a 15-yard penalty and now Kilgore has the ball at the CH 35.
- Kilgore now at the 18, and Brooks is loose to the 9-yard-line, but it looks like they’ll be called on a holding penalty.
- KHS is now in first-and-19 at the 27.
- Brooks is incomplete — had to throw it away, under duress — and it’s second and 19.
- Nevermind. A fumble on the exchange and Chapel Hill has it back at its own 29.
- And a FUMBLE on Chapel Hill’s exchange. They fall on it, but its an 11-yard loss at the 19.
- Brisbon scrambles for 5. It’s third and about 16 at the 23. Should have been a holding penalty on that. Stevie Wonder could have seen that hold. NO CALL.
- The third-down pass is incomplete, and it’s fourth and 16, still at the 23. Surely Chapel Hill will punt this ball. Brooks gets a hold of the punt, and had a 53-yarder. Kilgore’s ball at its own 24, with 3:47 left in the half.
- It’s third and 3 at the Kilgore 31, needing the 34 for a first down.
- Brooks drops back and stands for what seemed like forever, and finally hits Graves, who’s stopped right at the first down marker! It’s a first down!
- No gain on first down, and on second down, it’s a completion from Brooks to Watters, but for just a yard.
- On third and 7, Graves catches the ball at the line of scrimmage and then gets the first down, all the way to the 47.
- Time ticking. Watters makes a catch for about 6 yards to the CH 47 with 56 seconds left in the half.
- It’s another third down, third and 4, at the 48.
- Brooks throws it to Walton, but in traffic and he can’t hang onto it. It’s fourth down.

- The kickoff is another adventure, and Chapel Hill’s returner bobbles it, and fields it at the Chapel Hill 44.
- Stewart is returning for the second half. He gets about 2 yards on first down.
- Stewart again, and maybe a yard, if he’s lucky. It’s third and 8, still at midfield.
- Wylie Mitchell sacks Brisbon, a loss of about 6, back to Chapel Hill’s 40. It’s fourth and 15.
- Dre’ Sanders falls on the punt at the Kilgore 27, a 33-yard punt, no return. Kilgore takes over with 9:53 left in the third.
- Towns caught the first-down pass, but for a loss of 5.
- It’s second and long, about 14, 15.
- Watters ran for 9, but it’s still third and 6 at the 32.
- Wow, another close call, but Watters keeps the drive alive, a 5-yard run to the 37, and a new set of downs.
- Oh, wow — the line buys Brooks time and he delivers, a long strike to Towns! Towns got behind the defense and breaks it for a 57-yard pass to the Chapel Hill 6!

- On second down, Watters on a catch, but lost 2 yards, back to the 6. It’s third and goal.

- After a good return, Chapel Hill is back to midfield. Gee gets about 4 on the first down.
- After a couple of good runs by Gee and Stewart, Chapel Hill now at Kilgore’s 38. It’s second and 8 upcoming.
- Stewart gets the ball again, but Kilgore’s defense swarms all over him, and runs him out of bounds after maybe a yard.
- Gee gets nothing up the middle on the Kilgore defensive front. It’s fourth and 6.
- Gee goes long — TOUCHDOWN CHAPEL HILL, a 35-yard pass to Maliek Brown. There’s 4:48 left in the third quarter. Chapel Hill will go for two (down 16-6), and FAIL. The score remains 16-6, Kilgore.
- The squib kick lives again, but Kilgore gets it and keeps the ball. The ball is on the 50-yard-line, and belongs to Kilgore.
- Watters bolts to the Chapel Hill 28, for a 20-yard gain and a very big first down.
- Brooks goes to throw, but is rushed; he doubles back and rolls to his right. Javon Towns is open in the back of the end zone, and Chapel Hill’s coverage is short. Towns stands still and then makes the 28-yard grab in the back of the end zone for a TOUCHDOWN, KILGORE! Towns on the catch, Brooks the throw. With 3:22 left, Jiminez hits the extra point and puts Kilgore in front, 23-6.
- Towns appeared to be injured on the play, and is helped off the field by teammates. Hopefully just a cramp, or something not serious.

- Stewart gets the first down to the 50, for 5 more.
- Gee goes incomplete downfield to Brown. It’s second and 10.
- ANOTHER 15-yard unsportsmanlike flag on Chapel Hill, coming down after the play. Now it’s second and 25 at Chapel Hill 35. Gee goes long, far downfield, but Brooks can’t pull it in. It’s third and Miami. And Chapel Hill’s Gee completes it Damerion Blaylock, but for only 10 yards.
- It’s fourth and 15 at the 45.
- The punt gets into the end zone, just before Chapel Hill’s gunners can get to it.

- On first down, Watters gets the carry, and that will be the last play of the third quarter. It’s 23-6 Kilgore, and we’re headed to the fourth quarter.
- Kilgore’s offensive line — Collin Burrows, Jaden Pastor, Hunter Whipkey, Daniel Garcia, and Jonathan Barron — have taken over this game.
- Brooks on the quarterback run for about 9; it’s third and 3 at Kilgore’s own 38.

- There’s a yard gain on the play, and Kilgore has fourth and 4 at the 25.

- There’s just under 6 minutes left in the game.
- Rayshaun Williams back in the game, and he’s to the 8.
- Uh-Oh: Eli Young and Jackson Tucker Phillips, the big fellas, are in at the 5-yard-line. David McCowan doesn’t get the first down, but he’s close, fourth and 1 at the 4. He needs the 3 for the first down.
- Time out Kilgore before the play. There’s 3:37 left in the game, and Kilgore at the 4 yard line, on fourth and 1.
- The guys from the Ragin’ Red Broadcasting crew — Doug Smith, Don Hedrick and Jason Smith, and sometimes Alan Clark — work so hard, y’all. They do a fantastic job, and have done it (Doug and Don) for over 40 years.
