OVERTON RUNS OVER EVADALE | Mustangs blow ’em out, 68-0, and earn a rematch vs. Mart
To say Evadale didn’t match up well with Overton is kind of like saying a grasshopper didn’t match up well with an elephant.
Overton’s Mustangs – who won 10 games a year ago and lost to Mart in the UIL Class 2A, Division II playoffs – are going to get another shot at Mart this year.
Overton blasted Evadale, 68-0, on Thursday in San Augustine, just like they took care of Evadale a year ago in the 2023 first round. And just like ’23, Mart awaits in round two. Mart beat Cumby, 68-20, on Friday at Malakoff.
So Overton (9-2) will face Mart (9-2) on Friday, a 7 p.m. kickoff at Kemp High School. Texas High School Coaches Association, District 10-2A and District 11-2A and senior passes will all be accepted. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for students, and all of this information is straight from the Overton Mustang Athletics Facebook page.
Against Evadale Thursday night, the Mustangs jumped out to a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led 44-0 at the half.
By game’s end, quarterback Bryce Still had a hand in seven touchdowns: he completed 10-of-15 passes for 266 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions, and ran for 69 yards and two more touchdowns on just three carries.
Overton fans are used to Jayden Edwards having huge games, as well, and he did: four catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Bryson Bobbitt had three catches for 71 yards, all three of them touchdowns. Rylan Holleman had two catches for 19 yards, and Justin Weir had a catch for a yard, and also had 54 yards and a touchdown on two carries.
Gabriel Miller ran for 47 yards on two carries; Jackson Furlow had three carries for 6 yards; and Kash Holleman had just two carries for 3 yards – but scored a touchdown.
Miller and Kash Holleman each had eight tackles, and one for loss. Kason Hawkins had seven tackles, and Overton’s defense finished with eight tackles for loss, held Evadale to 66 rushing yards and zero points, sacked Evadale quarterback Brayden Carrell three times, and intercepted him four. Jacob Osburn had two picks, and Mason Rowe and Still (as a defensive back) had one. Furlow also had a fumble recovery.
Loved that comment about “like saying a grasshopper didn’t match up well with an elephant.” LOL
