AND THE HONORS GO TO… | Tatum’s Scott and LC’s Wheat, the Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Players of the Week!
Well, that didn’t take long.
This will be the fourth week of our awards, and we’ve already got a repeat winner.
But when you have 50 kills in two volleyball games, and one of those games is against teams like West Rusk, and then White Oak in a five-set battle, chances are you’re at the top of the list.
And while six-man football does tend to be a wide-open game, what our boys athlete did this week is – well, it’s ridiculous.
The Whataburger / ETBlitz.com Players of the Week for the week of Sept. 16-21 are Tatum’s Kamdyn Scott and Leverett’s Chapel’s Trent Wheat!
So yes, Kamdyn was honored once this year already: she was our very first girls winner of the season, the week of Aug. 26-30, alongside Sabine’s Colt Sparks. That week, Kamdyn and the Lady Eagles were ranked 13th in the state in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, playing a few regular season games and were also still in tournament play.
The first time she won the player of the week award this season, for performances against Henderson and in the Forney tournament, she had 32 kills and 19 digs in tournament wins over Tyler Legacy, Garland Naaman Forest, and Kaufman in the Forney tourney, and 18 kills in a win over Henderson.
Well, this past week, she topped that.
In district play, against another state-ranked team in West Rusk on Tuesday and then against White Oak last Friday, to say Scott rose to the occasion would be a gross understatement. Against West Rusk, Kamdyn had 20 kills, six digs, four aces and three blocks, and then in a five-set win over White Oak on Friday, she had 30 kills, 21 digs, four blocks and three aces, just an unbelievable week of play.
And by the way – Tatum is now No. 3 in the TGCA poll, and was the ETBlitz.com Team of The Week this week (THE ETBLITZ.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK | Hey, it’s the TATUM LADY EAGLES!).

What Mr. Wheat did for the Lions was pretty incredible, too.
In the six-man game, we see some inflated numbers – it’s true. There’s just not as many people to tackle you, facts, and points are going to be scored, yards are going to pile up – offenses are going to run wild. It’s not out of the norm, or against the grain, for a good six-man team to hit 75, 80 points several times in the course of a season, and if that team has great players and athletes, touchdown totals can get exaggerated.
But still – Trent Wheat’s statistics from Leverett’s Chapel’s 80-51 win last Thursday at home over East Texas HomeSchool have to be applauded as just an unbelievable effort.
Wheat ran the length of more than four football fields, people.
He had 25 carries for 411 yards, and here’s the rest of it: the young man scored nine – NINE – touchdowns. That’s just insane.
We knew Wheat was special – we had been told that not only by current LC head coach Keith Hughes, but by Matt Everett and other folks at LC. And we were covering Thursday night’s game.
But to see those numbers on paper – it’s just astounding, even for the wide-open six-man game.
So, for his performance in the Lions’ win over ETHS the week of Sept. 16-21, Trent Wheat is our Whataburger / ETBlitz.com boys Player of the Week. Congratulations, Trent!
