This time last year, Braydon Nelson was getting ready to enter his senior season at Kilgore High School, the Bulldogs’ starting left tackle in football and a track and field thrower to beat the band, so to speak: a sure-fire contender for a state track meet spot in both discus and shot put.

He was ready to play out his senior season as a verbal commit to the University of North Texas, and then do the track thing.

And boy, did he.

A year later, and Nelson accomplished those goals. He helped get the Bulldogs a district title (one they shared with absolutely no other team) and deep into the UIL Class 4A playoffs, all the way to the semifinals, and then he won the silver medal in the 4A boys shot put before winning the gold in discus, doing so on his last throw!

Now, the soft-spoken former Bulldog is in Denton, throwing humanity around for UNT. And head coach Chad Morris is glad to have Nelson on his side.

“Braydon Nelson is a guy that’s a true freshman that continues to gain our respect,” said Morris, on MeanGreen247, the website that covers UNT sports, “continues to gain our trust and someone that, quite frankly, I’m not scared to put him in a game right now. He has the weight. He has the strength, and he continues to do a good job.”

Morris confirmed to MeanGreen247 that Nelson is in contention for a starting spot on the offensive line, and he’s now listed at 6-foot-4, 309 pounds.
