Overton High School’s softball team had its best season in years – maybe ever – and more recognition is coming in.

The annual Blue Bell / Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 2A All-State Softball Team has been announced – voters for that all-state team are the ones who actually cover these teams on a weekly basis, and see those kids play all around the state, and know who actually deserves it.

And there are Lady Mustangs on the team. Both Kayla Nobles and Kasha Williams were named second-team TSWA All-State, and then Halle Mayfield, Anna Perkins and Kelsey Vaught were all named TSWA All-State honorable mention.

Nobles played second base for Overton; Williams was the team’s designated hitter/flex player; Mayfield, the first baseman; Perkins, the catcher; and Vaught, a pitcher.

Overton went 25-11-1 on the season, and 9-1 in District 19-2A, winning the district championship. The Lady Mustangs beat Martin’s Mill in a one-game playoff in the first round; defeated Bowie in a best-of-three-game series, losing game two and then bouncing back to win the third game; and then lost to Cross Roads in two games, taking that second game to extra innings.

In 56 at-bats, Nobles, who batted .554, had 31 hits, scored 16 runs, hit five doubles, six triples, six home runs, led the team with 32 RBI, an on-base percentage of .609, a slugging percentage of 1.178, and 17 stolen bases.

Williams had a .392 batting average, and in 51 at-bats, had 20 hits, scored 16 runs, had eight doubles, and a home run. She had an on-base percentage of .492 and a slugging percentage of .607, and had 10 stolen bases on the season.

Mayfield batted .310, and had 18 hits in 58 at-bats, scoring 23 runs. She had eight doubles and two triples, 16 stolen bases, was charged with only one error defensively all season at first base, had a slugging percentage of .517 and an on-base percentage of .459.

Perkins led the team in scoring (she scored 25 runs), had a .507 batting average, and in 69 at-bats, had 35 hits, 13 doubles, three triples, and five homers. Her on-base percentage was .564 and her slugging percentage, 1.000, and she led the team in stolen bases (21).

Vaught had a .400 batting average, had 19 hits in 45 at-bats, including nine doubles, five triples and a homer; she had a slugging percentage of .555 and an on-base percentage of .500. She stole nine bases in 2024.

And she was a leader defensively on the mound for Overton. She made 19 appearances for the Lady Mustangs, and had a 3.21 earned run average (ERA). She threw 1,632 pitches over 102 1/3 innings, allowing 65 runs, 47 of them earned, on 131 hits; she walked only 19 batters, and struck out 131. In 456 batters faced, she allowed NO doubles and NO triples, and six home runs.

Her opponents’ on-base percentage: .300.
