Here’s an understatement: the Overton High School athletic program has had a pretty good year.

That’s kind of like saying the sky is sort of blue, and Santa Claus wears an off-shade of red.

Overton’s football team had its best season in 30 years, at least. Boys basketball, too. The fates of baseball and softball have yet to be decided. Both boys and girls golf teams are playing at regionals this week at the Cherokee Ranch course in Jacksonville.

And now, track and field athletes are moving on to the regional meet this coming Friday at Palestine, one step away from the state track and field meet.

Jayden Edwards will compete at regionals in the long jump after qualifying in the event on Friday at the area meet in Cushing. Edwards finished second at area with a best of 19 feet, 8 ½ inches.

Edwards is also going to regionals in the 200 meter dash, after finishing fourth at area (23.60 seconds).

Christian Hall is headed to Palestine as a first-place finisher in the high jump. Hall won the thing at area with a best of 6 feet, 4 inches.

Bryce Still, who seems to be good at everything, is going to regionals in the 800 meter run. He finished fourth at area (2 minutes, 10.22 seconds).

Kaylee Stevens qualified for regionals in the triple jump (32 feet, 4 ½ inches), with a third-place finish at area, and also made it in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing fourth (17.67 seconds).

Overton girls athletes who competed at area that just missed on regional trips: Stevens in the 300 meter hurdles (fifth, 51.97 seconds); Mason Fenter in the 300 hurdles (54.58 seconds); the girls 800 meter relay team of Kelsey Vaught, Makayla Edwards, Kyuana Brown and Ja’Miya Oneal, a sixth-place finish; the mile relay team of Vaught, Stevens, Fenter and Oneal, also a sixth-place finish; Oneal in the triple jump, just missing with a fifth-place finish; Ashby Croswell in the shot, a sixth-place finish, as well as Kasha Williams; and Croswell in the discus, also a sixth-place finish, as well as Jada Johnson in the discus.

Mustangs who just missed on making regionals: Edwards in the 100 meter dash, having finished fifth; Vincent Herron in the two-mile run (11 minutes, 30.30 seconds); Hall in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing sixth; Justin Weir in the 300 meter hurdles, also finishing sixth; the 800 meter relay team of Gabriel Miller, Weir, Jacob Osburn and Rylan Holleman, with a sixth-place finish at area; the mile relay team of Still, Osburn, Holleman and Edwards, having finished fifth; Elijah Dorsey (fifth) and Kadden Williams in the shot put, and Williams in the discus (sixth).

The athletes who do well enough in Palestine this coming Friday and Saturday at the regional meet will represent Overton at the University Interscholastic League State Track & Field Championships at the University of Texas in Austin on May 2-4.
