LADY RANGERS TO SEMIS! | Looking for back-to-back championships; Rangers face Paris today at 1; STREAMING VIDEO LINKS INSIDE

Step two of the Kilgore College Lady Rangers’ path to a second straight Region XIV Conference Women’s Tournament championship was completed Wednesday night.

Step one, of course, was a successful regular season that left coach Stephanie Williams’ team as the tournament’s second overall seed, a first-round bye and perhaps a bit easier journey in the event. Step two was a 57-55 win over Angelina College on Wednesday night here at Lee College in Baytown, the same site as last year, when the KC ladies went on a tear, won the tournament and reached the NJCAA National Tournament.

They’re going to do their very best to duplicate that feat this year. The win over AC moves the Lady Rangers into the semifinal round, where they’ll face rival Tyler Junior College at 3 p.m. on Friday. All of the women’s division of the tournament is off today (Thursday), as the men’s tournament takes center stage for the second round, or quarterfinals.

Today’s games: Top-seeded Trinity Valley taking on Paris at 1 p.m.; fourth-seeded Blinn meeting Panola at 3; coach Robert Byrd’s second-seeded Kilgore College Rangers facing home-team Lee College at 6; and third seed TJC meeting Angelina at 8

The men’s semifinal games are Friday evening, at 6 and at 8, and of course, the participants in those games will be decided today.

Championship Saturday begins with the ladies’ tournament final at 4 p.m., and then the men’s championship game will follow at 7.

The prize for both: not just the bragging rights of being the Region XIV Men’s and Women’s Tournament champions, but a trip to the NJCAA Nationals.

For KC in the win over Angelina, Ja’Sani Green had 17 points and seven rebounds. Rhylei Hendrick and Madison Bob each scored 10. Bob had six rebounds, and Hendrick had two, and an assist.

Brooklyn King had six points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot for KC, now 19-12 on the season. Kira Johnson had five points, three rebounds and two assists. Anyla Herbert scored four points and had seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks.

Rhianna Battles had three points and three assists, and Zariyah Edwards finished with two points, but also six rebounds.

Angelina’s Aminah Dixon led all scorers with 23 points. Timberlyn Washington and Ja’Kaila Lee each had 13.

Oddly enough, Angelina’s bench didn’t score a single point in the contest.
