TOUGH NIGHT | Jefferson deals Sabine ninth loss of the season
LIBERTY CITY – The 2025 season hasn’t been a lot of fun for the Sabine Cardinals, who have had a very difficult schedule (as always), and Friday wasn’t a lot different.
Jefferson’s Bulldogs came to town for a District 8-3A, Division I game Friday night, and Sabine – already a young team that could ill-afford missing faces – was without its starting quarterback, and a couple of receivers, as well. Jefferson did its thing, and left with a 47-0 win.
Sabine’s seniors were honored prior to the game.
From the roster we have here at ETBlitz, those seniors are Darrin Borden, Carter Peters, Ashton Tave, Lincoln Royce, Landry Laird, Keeghan Cominsky, Cole Loveless, and Kelton Lee.
The loss drops Sabine to 0-9 this season. The Cardinals will be off this week (Oct. 31), and finish up with a trip to Texarkana on Nov. 7 to Liberty-Eylau.
Sabine forced a turnover on downs on Jefferson’s first possession, and quarterback Syler Pierce completed a pass to Terry Vanden for a 20-yard gain for the Cards. On the next play, though, Jefferson’s Kobin Tomlinson picked it off and went 95 yards for the score, the first of the game and with Fisher Bradley’s extra point, a 7-0 Jefferson lead.
On a third down play on Sabine’s next possession, Pierce was pressured and threw over the middle into the arms of Tomlinson, another pick. With a short field, the Bulldogs scored quickly. Tomlinson, at quarterback, found Tre Moss for 19 yards, then on third down, Chance Washington went the final 13 for the score.
A holding penalty opened the next drive for the Cardinals, putting them in an immediate hole of which they couldn’t really climb out. Jefferson’s defense held and forced a punt. After a short punt, Bradley carried the ball three times for 17, 22 and a final 3 and the score. He missed the extra point, but left the Bulldogs up 20-0 to end the first quarter.
Sabine’s woes continued into the second quarter. They could not get their feet under them as they moved backwards and were again forced to punt. This drive saw Tomlinson find Moss for 22 yards before he took the final 5 yards on his own for the touchdown. The extra point was again missed, but left the Bulldogs up 26-0.
Trying to make something work, Pierce went to the air. On third down, he went deep and Lemarion Douglas went up to defend and came away with the interception. The first play from scrimmage, Tomlinson found an open Travis Gray, who outran the Cardinal defense for a 61-yard score. The added extra point put the Bulldogs up by 33.
With the half winding down, the Cardinal offense was again forced to punt. With a short field, the Bulldogs had time to put another drive together. Tomlinson found Bradley for 34 yards and topped off the drive with a 24-yard touchdown to Douglas and a halftime score of 40-0.
Jefferson would score one final time, a 10-yard score by Vonte Black in the third quarter.
The Cardinals were led by Damin Richardson, who had 35 yards on the ground and Pierce, who had 25 yards passing. Vanden led the team with 29 yards receiving. The Bulldogs were led by Bradley with 42 yards on the ground. Tomlinson added 32 on the ground and 150 passing yards. Gray led the team with his one catch for 61 yards and Brdley added 34 and Douglas 24.
