MUSTANGS DROP HAMMER ON TENAHA | Overton takes care of business in 41-7 Saturday night win; hosts Lovelady this Friday

The Overton Mustangs are in a VERY difficult district.

Overton is actually one of the reasons why District 11-2A, Division I is arguably the toughest small-school districts in the state, and maybe, along with 9-4A-DII, the two toughest in East Texas.

District 11-2A has Overton – winners of 24 games since August, 2023 – as well as Mount Enterprise (with running back Kaegan Ash, one of the state’s best; the Wildcats are 5-0), Grapeland (4-2), one of two losses the Mustangs have this year; and of course, Lovelady (5-0), the number four team in the state in last week’s Dave Campbell’s Texas Football state poll in 2A-DII.

This weekend, coach Scotty Laymance and the Mustangs decided it was time for some Saturday Night Lights (cue the “Saturday Night Fever” theme) and made a trip to Tenaha, formerly one of Overton’s biggest rivals. The result?

Well, Tenaha, which has won quite a bit at the state level, is not a state title contender right now.

In fact, the Tigers are not a DISTRICT title contender right now.

Overton took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter in Tenaha Saturday, then blew the doors off, a 21-point second quarter on the way to a 41-7 win.

Justin Weir and Landon Hill filled in at quarterback for a shaken-up Rylan Holleman and did a nice job. Weir went 7-of-9 for 130 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for 99 yards and two scores on nine carries. And Hill threw a touchdown (50 yards).

Gabe Miller had a big night: 142 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries; had a catch for 53 yards and a touchdown and had four tackles on defense, three for loss.

Hunter Klima had two catches for 97 yards and a touchdown; Jacob Osburn had two for 28 yards; Ivan Ransom had a catch for 3 yards; and Brody Brown and Hill each had a catch for a yard.

Kilma and Gunnar Whitfield each had seven tackles; Colton Stinecipher had six stops and Jorge Espinosa and Weir each had five. Whitfield had four tackles for loss – Overton as a team had 13 of those.

Hill and Kason Hawkins each had a quarterback hurry, and Kima had a sack.

And Jackson Furlow was 6-of-6 in extra point kicks, and also had a 37-yard field goal.

Overton has a big one next Friday: a 7 p.m. kickoff at home at Coach Chester Roy Stadium against unbeaten Lovelady.
