Today’s football preview: SABINE
We’re on day six of 15 Previews in 15 Days, and today finds Joe Hale taking a closer look at coach Cody Gilbert and his Sabine High School Cardinals. They’re thrust into a tough district with three state-ranked teams AND Tatum, Gladewater and White Oak.
Here’s an excerpt from the Sabine preview.
“Some things change, but some don’t, though. District 8-3A, Division I) is one of the toughest around with last year’s three top teams (champion) Jefferson, (runner-up) Liberty-Eylau and (third-place) Atlanta expecting to be tough and very competitive again, along with Tatum, coming off a playoff campaign of its own, as a bi-district finalist with a 6-5 record.
Add Gladewater, with a new head football coach (Jermaine Lewis) and White Oak, in its third season under Michael Ludlow as its head football coach, likely to be improved over its 5-5 record a year ago.
It’s a challenge, but those come with the territory on Friday nights of the fall in Texas.
Beginning his fourth season at the helm of Sabine football, Cody Gilbert is all-inoptimistic about improving on a 2-8 overall record (0-6 against district opponents) a year ago.
Gilbert isn’t selling his young players short. “We’re going to be young with lots of sophomores playing vital roles. These guys will have to earn a spot and make a name for themselves in the coming months. We’re going to work toward that,” Gilbert said.”

The Bulletin Board updated again
Our newest feature, The Bulletin Board, is updated again this morning. Guys, there’s just so much happening right now, we’re probably going to have to update The Bulletin Board every single day for a while. If you’re a coach, or if you have an event upcoming that your community needs to know more about, The Bulletin Board is FREE. Now, we can’t run garage sales and moving announcements, but if it involves a fundraiser, say a golf tournament, or an activity involving any of the high schools in our coverage area, email me at mlucas@etblitz.com, and I’ll make sure it gets in. There’s this, though: don’t wait until your event is at the doorstep to let us know.
For the record, we cover Arp, Beckville, Carthage, Gilmer, Gladewater, Henderson, Kilgore, Leverett’s Chapel, Overton, Pine Tree, Sabine, Tatum, Troup, West Rusk, and White Oak, in addition to Kilgore College, and now Tyler Junior College and the rest of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. And The Bulletin Board is presented by Clower Meats, in Kilgore.
Here it is: ETBLITZ BULLETIN BOARD, presented by CLOWER MEATS | Updated Tuesday, Aug. 12.
Volleyball preview Wednesday
The high school volleyball season has started, and we’ll get you ready with a preview of all of the sport at all of those schools I just mentioned. It’ll hit Wednesday here on ETBlitz.com, and we’d like to publicly thank all of the coaches who participated with our questionnaire, and wish everyone good luck this season.
There are some first-year head coaches; there are some coaches in their first season at a new place; there are some familiar faces in old places (looking at you, Rickey Hammontree, Leverett’s Chapel, and Casey Falgout, Beckville, who both returned to programs they’ve coached before), and there are some places (Tatum, just to name one) where there are high expectations and deservedly so.
Volleyball season is a grind – not that all sports aren’t, but it starts in the summer, really (and before that, if you’re in club play) and doesn’t end until the UIL State Tournament late in the fall. It’s not for the weak at heart. And we’ll have results from all over the area here on the site along the way.
